PowerPoint Presentation : Why Study the Arabic Language? Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan... for Allaah! Grammar 101 – 1 4 Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan – for Allaah! Our most important responsibility is to know Allaah, Glorified and Exalted is He. The original authentic information about Him is found in the Qur’aan and Sunnah, which is in Arabic. Arabic is a vehicle to help us understand and appreciate in the best way, the Book of Allaah – which contains the correct information about Allaah, the Almighty. Allaah’s Beautiful Names and Sublime Attributes, which tell us who Allaah is are best understood in Arabic. By learning the Arabic language, we will understand the supplications and remembrances that we recite in our prayers and throughout the day – this will help to attach our hearts to Allaah, the Most High – this is our aim in life! Finally, if one studies Arabic with the intention to please Allaah, seeking His Face Alone – it becomes an act of worship that brings countless rewards from the Most Merciful.

PowerPoint Presentation : OUR ADVICE ON: Your Approach to the Language Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan... for Allaah! Grammar 101 – 1 5 Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan – for Allaah! Try to study phrases (complete sentences) , not individual words. To speak or understand Arabic does not demand a study of grammar, vocabulary is the key ( consider how a small child learns to speak). Listen carefully first and internalize the language. Slow, deep learning is best – do not rush! Use listen & answer techniques. Although our Arabic language session will meet once per week, we must remember that the other two topics of this course; (i.e. the Qur’aan and S alaah sessions) contain vocabulary that will be included as part of this class. Information , vocabulary and grammar points will carry over from one session to another . IMPORTANT: Even if you feel like you are not learning, do not worry, just continue – one lesson at a time - and after some time, you would find that it is coming together. In shaa ’ Allaah .

PowerPoint Presentation : Grammar is the study of the way in which words combine to form sentences .  W hile vocabulary is the key to speaking and understanding a language, a study of grammar is essential if one wants to know a language well. Grammar can become very complicated so it requires a lot of concentration and revision . Your emphasis should be to focus on the rules/principles as we go along and what happens in each circumstance. Over time, the terms used for each rule will become easier In shaa ’ Allaah . So be patient – since this is the key for a successful attempt to learn this important language! NOTE : Studying grammar by itself would not be enough for one to get a sound grip of the language, for this reason we are studying the language from the Qur’aan and S alaah using words and sentences that you are already using and are fully familiar with! Do you know that you are already speaking Arabic and believe it or not – with the Lord of the worlds – what honor for you! An Introduction to Grammar Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan... for Allaah! PowerPoint Presentation : اِسْـمُ الإِشَارَة The Demonstrative Pronoun Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan... for Allaah! Grammar 101 – 1 7 Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan – for Allaah! In the Arabic language, the (masculine/singular) demonstrative pronouns are: هَـذَا   and ذَلِـكَ   هَذَا   indicates nearness and it means ‘ This (is) … ’ ذَلِـكَ   indicates distance and it means ‘ That (is) … ’ Note : هَذَا is pronounced  هَاذَا and ذَلِـكَ   is pronounced ذَالِـكَ , but they are written without the first elongated alif . (The first alif is present in pronunciation but not in writing). In English grammar, the word demonstrative means: “ Showing who or what is being referred to. ” A demonstrative pronoun is a single demonstrative word that takes the place of a noun, a noun phrase, a string of noun phrases, an activity, or a situation. It also indicates the relative location of the word or words that it is replacing.

Grammar 101 – 1 8 Learn Arabic to Understand Quraan – for Allaah! هَذَا بَيْتٌ ذَلِكَ بَابٌ هَذَا مَسْجِدٌ There are 2 types of sentences in the Arabic language: The n ominal sentence i.e. a sentence that begins with a noun (or that which takes the place of a noun like pronouns, and demonstrative pronouns, etc.) The v erbal sentence i.e. a sentence which starts with a verb. In this lesson we are going to be dealing with the nominal sentence – الْجُمْلَةُ الاسْمِيَّةُ . By putting together the demonstrative pronoun with a noun, we get a complete sentence. Below are some examples: Note: Arabic has no word equivalent to the English word “is.”   The word ه َذَا   and the noun مَسْجِدٌ   become هَذَا مَسْجِدٌ . If read literally, this sentence translates as “This a mosque.” However, the word “is” is implied in this sentence so that it reads; “This is a mosque.” This is a mosque. That is a door. This is a house.
