Writing Test Preparation : Writing Test Preparation The writing test lasts for 60 minutes. There is an Academic module and a General module. Both Academic and General modules are similar. Both Academic and General modules are split into two tasks; task 1 lasts for 20 minutes and you must write 150 words. Task 2 lasts for 40 minutes and you must write 250 words. For both tasks you will be scored on content, quality and technical detail. You will need to communicate your thoughts effectively, use appropriate grammar and vocabulary and present arguments and details with coherent understanding. A general understanding of writing for different situations will be required in order to present relevant understanding in a coherent way. Discovering the Writing Process : Discovering the Writing Process The writing process always begins with three stages. Pre writing Writing Post writing The writing process is further defined to bring forth understanding through ideas and generating those ideas through logical steps and effective systems. For example: Making a word cluster (the teacher will show you a cluster) Brainstorming The Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Expository Writing : Expository Writing What is Expository writing? Expository writing is the writing you encounter everyday in life. It explains thoughts and explores and presents information. With expository writing we must find the subject matter, gather our recorded information, plan our writing, create an informal outline and consider our audience. The Expository Paragraph A paragraph must have unity; what’s the main idea? It should have coherence; readers should be able to move from one point to another. Paragraphs should be developed to show one or all of details, examples, reasons, comparing and contrasting and thought. The Expository Composition The purpose of expository writing is to inform and explain. Expository writing may be broken into parts, for example some topics have far too much detail to write about so we may want to write short papers highlighting main points. In this case a thesis may explore and state the purpose of the paper and give it sharpness, direction and focus. Expository writing includes an introduction, the body and a conclusion. Other Types of Writing : Other Types of Writing There are various types of writing which may include the following: Writing a research report (should include relevant detail and findings) Imaginative writing - poems (should express feelings, sounds and imagination) Short stories and plays (understand action, plot, characters, setting and drama) Writing to persuade (think of emotions, reasoning, opinions and audience) Writing for the business world (letters, reports, applications, etc) In all writing we must be clear about who we are writing for. For example in the IELTS test , if you are taking the Academic route, you will be expected to understand reports and be able to write research papers. The General module on the other hand will test You for basic understanding and your ability to be able to communicate effectively. Also, be aware that students should also be able to understand and interpret graphs and charts as part of the writing process.
