His is a mixed art ‘in which the soundest and the truest liberties of the romantics are grafted on to a general background of order and choice’. He has been called the ‘Father of English Prose’ and also produced the first extended works of literary theory in the language and consequently contributed immensely to the development and enrichment of the literary language.
