Novelist and poet, Hardy is a realist who makes man an insignificant part of the world, struggling against power greater than himself. A prolific and versatile writer he wrote tragedies, comedies, romances and some short stories too. He is basically a pessimist. His novels though generally powerful and fascinating are not very pleasant. He wrote poetry in his later life expressing common ideas in common words.
