IELTS owners
The IELTS is conducted jointly by British Council, the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) and IELTS Australia, which is the sub-division of IDP, the leading educational organization of Australia.

IELTS test material
Experts chosen from different English-speaking countries develop the test material. This process to develop IELTS content was implemented to ensure that the exam remains fair and unbiased. The test content development teams are located in the USA, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other English speaking nations. The team makes sure the English course for the IELTS exam is chosen carefully.

IELTS test structure
There are two versions of the IELTS exam: the Academic Version and the General Training Version:
  • The Academic Version of IELTS test is intended for those who want to enroll in universities and other institutions of higher education and for professionals such as medical doctors and nurses who want to study or practice in an English-speaking country.
  • The General Training Version of IELTS test is intended for those planning to undertake non-academic training or to gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.

For the English language course test candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules, while the Reading and Writing Modules differ depending on whether the candidate is taking the Academic or General Training Versions of the ILETS Test.

A total of 2 hours and 45 minutes are given to write the IELTS exam: Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are done in one sitting whereas the Speaking test may be on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other tests.

The Speaking test is conducted in the form of a one-to-one interview with an examiner. The examiner assesses the candidate as he or she is speaking.
