SPEED AND VELOCITY distance and displacement Distance covered by a body is the total path covered by it in a given interval of time.It can take only positive values and never negative. It is a scalar quantity(magnitude only no direction). Its units are meter, centimeter, kilometer, mile etc. Displacement is the change in position of a particle in a particular direction,in a given interval of time.It is vector quantity(magnitude and direction) and can take any values.Displacement between the two places is length of the straight line between them. Its units are same as that of distance. SPEED: Speed of a particle is the distance covered by it in unit time or it is the time rate of change of distance. It is a scalar quantity and have only positive values.Police use speed guns to measure speed of vehicle and speedometer used in vehicle measures its speed. Its unit is the ratio of unit of distance and time. Its units are centimeter/s,meter/second,km/s,miles/s,km/hour,miles/hour,km/minute,meter/minute,etc. Speed = distance travelled / time. VELOCITY: Velocity is the rate of change of displacement of a body or it is the displacement of a particle in a particular direction in unit time.It is vector quantity and having the unit same as that of speed. It can have negative, zero and positive values. If a particle is moving in a circle it has zero velocity because direction always changes(displacement zero) ,but it has speed. Velocity = displacement / time taken.
