What do you need for my Online Classes Professor Snidecor Thank you for deciding to take a class from me. So that all my students can get the most out of our class there are a few things you will need and a few issues to cover. Students will need a Laptop or other computer with a sound card. A headset with microphone is required for our interactive lessons and class participation. Its important that you turn off your speakers or they will create a feedback squeal by sending the audio from your speakers into the microphone on your headset, and then nobody will be able to hear anything. Classes meet twice a week, once on Sunday night or Monday morning and the second class Thursday night or Friday morning. During the first class session you will receive your reading assignments, lectures and video instruction, you need to be in attendance for this class or view it later at your convenience. Students should be aware that my classes are recorded for you and are available for downloading into your own computer usually the day after the live class. The second class is interactive and optional. Both classes cover the same material and the second holds great promise. If you are having problems with the material then the second class will be of considerable value in completing the class. Textbooks All of the General Education Classes I offer here are Undergraduate level Classes and I include all the required Textbooks in Word and/or PDF files. I offer Science Classes every other year and when I do you will need to purchase a Student Pass to Wadsworth Thomson Learning where you can gain access to the Cyber Laboratory & Library For a modest fee of about $25.00 for the Academic Year. Educational Tools We use Power Point presentations, written documents that can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat, word documents that open with Word for Windows, written and audio books that can be viewed or played with Microsoft Reader, videos that can be played with VLC media player. My College Students will find the programs listed below available by link from the College Online Support page and Live Online Support is available 24/7 with a link on the same Support page. Please visit your own home page where you will find the links under the word Support. My WiZiQ Students will find the links below for their use. PowerPoint is a Microsoft product that allows us to do many great things to help you learn. We can make slides and add sound or interactive features to help you get the right perspective on complex issues or processes. You can download the free PowerPoint Viewer 2007 at the following address: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=048dc840-14e1-467d-8dca-19d2a8fd7485&displaylang=en Adobe Acrobat is the one document processor that crosses all the platforms and has some thrifty compression for easy uploading and downloading. You can get your free reader here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/ Word Viewer is the free tool for those that don’t have Microsoft’s Word for Windows program. You can download your free viewer from the Microsoft Web site here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3657ce88-7cfa-457a-9aec-f4f827f20cac&displaylang=en VLC Media Player is the only player you need to play any video file. Well it seems to play all the files I have found, and they say that it plays all file formats, yes it includes Real Player files too! You can download the free VLC Media Player for Windows or Mac at the following address: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ Microsoft Reader is absolutely the best book reader you can get! It’s a small but powerful tool with lots of extras. You can get your free reader at the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/READER/ Here is what the Microsoft site has to say: Microsoft Reader is a free, downloadable software application that allows you to read eBooks on Windows-based devices you may already own. Take advantage of a growing marketplace of over 60,000 eBook titles while enjoying the convenience and features of Microsoft Reader. Now let me add that for my students only I am pleased to send you 250 titles for Microsoft Reader and all you need to do is to write me and ask for the books (Please verify that your E-Mail program/provider will allow you to receive a 30 Meg file.). I was born before the Computer revolution and I actually purchased the Radio Shack TRS-80 Computer… later I took several Microsoft Certifications. There are still students who have problems understanding how to make the Computer work for them. If this sounds like you, don’t worry, help is on the way! Take a few hours and visit the Microsoft Educational Site at: http://www.microsoft.com/about/corporatecitizenship/citizenship/giving/programs/up/digitalliteracy/default.mspx You will find all kinds of help there and its free. Some Important Links Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Who knows, if you want lots of free books then here is the place to start with, the University of Pennsylvania at: http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/search.html You didn’t find the book you wanted at the UoP?
