TOPIC: Modals
General Objectives
To enable the learner to acquire competence in different linguistic functions.
To reinforce the various sub-skills acquired related to reading , writing , listening & speaking .
To broaden the language base to enable the learner to use language effectively.
Create interest in English Grammar.
Enable them to apply grammatical rules while writing.
Specific Objectives: (Student – centered, observable, precise)
To make them familiar with rules of “ Modals”
To enable them to use modals.
They will develop interest in modals.
Various modals and their examples will be introduced to them.
To enable them to differentiate among modals.
They will be enabled to use modals correctly.
Apparatuses & Teaching Aids: Powerpoint Presentation, marker, whiteboard, eLanguages’ International Projects etc.
Introduction: (Attention getter, anticipatory set, discrepant event, engagement.)
Questions will be asked from the students to evaluate pupil’s knowledge regarding modals and their use. Slides will be shown to the students. Students will be informed about the use of different modals and their examples.
Student’s activity:
They will note down different modals and their examples on their notebooks. The teacher will direct them to write a few sentences using modals by themselves.
Students will be asked to make use of some modals.
Instruction by the teacher would provide opportunities for students to make progress towards intended instructional objectives.
Summarization of taught concept: (A planned wrap-up for the lesson)
1. Main modals are as- can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, ought to etc.
2. Modal is never used alone but with the main verb. Only the first form of verb can be used after a modal.
3. Modals express such ideas as ability, possibility, probability, duty, obligation or permission etc.
Home-Assignment:
Write different modals and their two examples.
Frame five sentences using modals.
Find modals in the textbook.
Outcome:
1. When the teaching is finished, students will be able to use different modals.
They will differentiate among various modals.
They will collect examples from grammar books, textbooks.
They will be able to frame sentences using modals.
They will ask questions using these modals.
