Slide 4 : A few remarks about pronunciation and spelling
2 : deux, we drop the x
3 : trois, we drop the s
5 : cinq, we pronounce the final q, but if followed by another number, we may drop the consonant
6 : six, we pronounce the final s ( same remark as above)
7 : sept, we pronounce the t, but we drop the p
8 : huit, we pronounce the final t, but in 814, (huit cent-quatorze) we drop the t
9 : neuf, we pronounce the final f, but if followed by a vowel, the f is more like a v
Ex : ce petit garçon a neuf ans (neuvan)
21 : vingt et un, we make the linkage between vingt and et, no linkage between et and un
22 : vingt et deux, we accentuate the final t in vingt
Slide 5 : 70 : soixante-dix, we pronounce the final X as an S
The same for 90, 110 and so on…
When cent is multiplied and not followed by another fraction, we write cent with an S
Ex : j’ai payé cette armoire deux cents euros (200€) , but
J’ai payé cette armoire deux cent quatre-vingt-dix euros (290€)
Six, huit and dix 6, 8 and 10 : we drop the final consonant when it is followed by cent; mille, million, milliard
Ex : 600 si(x) cents, si(x) mille, si(x) millions, si(x) milliards
800 hui(t) cents, hui(t) mille, hui(t) millions, hui(t) milliards
10000 di(x) mille, di(x) millions; di(x) milliards
With cinq, you may hear or not the final q
Ex : 500000 cinq cent mille or cin(q) cent mille
