7 wonders and Reading and comprehension quiz
THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLDWhat do a giant, a lighthouse, and a pyramid all have in common? They are all on the list of The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This list includes structures built more than 2000 years ago that were popular places with ancient Hellenic1 tourists. They are located around the eastern end of the Mediterranean Rim. The most well-known Wonder is the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. The Pyramid was built between 2584 and 2561 BCE2 as a tomb for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu. It is the only Wonder that is still standing today. Egypt was also the location of another Wonder on the list, the Lighthouse of Alexandria. This was constructed around 280 BCE and measured 135 meters high. It was one of the tallest buildings in the world for centuries. Built at approximately the same time as the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Colossus of Rhodes (the “giant” referred to above) was located in Greece. It was in honor of Helios, the Greek god of the sun. About 200 years older than the Colossus of Rhodes was the Statue of Zeus at Olympia. It was located in Greece, too. The Statue stood for about 1,000 years until it was destroyed by fire. Two more Wonders had a difficult end. The Temple of Artemis of Ephesus and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus were built in Turkey between 550 and 350 BCE. Fire and angry mobs ruined the Temple three times. In a similar way, flood, earthquake, and finally, invaders destroyed the Mausoleum. The Seventh Wonder of the Ancient World is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. In 600 BCE, King Nebuchadnezzar II constructed them for his wife. They were located in present-day Iraq and were destroyed by an earthquake. So why are there only Seven Wonders of the Ancient World? For the Ancient Greeks, the number seven was a symbol for perfection and plenty. They believed that no more Wonders were necessary.Hellenic1 = Ancient Greek; BCE2 = Before Common EraQUESTIONSAnswer the following questions based on the reading, “The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World”.What is the only Ancient Wonder still standing today?
