Slide 1 : Whole Numbers
Uses of Numbers : Uses of Numbers Numbers are used for counting
Numbers are used for Measuring
Numbers are used to show where something is in a refernce system
Numbers are used to compare amounts or measure
Numbers are used for identification and as codes
Kinds of numbers : Kinds of numbers Counting Numbers
Whole Numbers
Fractions
Decimals
Negative Numbers
Place Value for whole NUmbers : Place Value for whole NUmbers The place for a digit is its position in the number
The value is how much it is worth according to its place in the number
Place Value chart : Place Value chart
Powers of 10 : Powers of 10 Numbers like 10,100,1000,10000 are called powers of 10,
Numbers that can be written as product of 10
10²
The raised number is called an exponent. The exponent tells how many times 10 is multiplied by itself
Exponential Notation : Exponential Notation A number written with an exponent is in exponential notation.
A square array consists of the same number of rows and columns.
A whole number that can be represented by a square array is called a square number.
Any square number can be written as the product of a number multiplied by itself.
Exponent : Exponent 2²
Scientific Notation : Scientific Notation Scientific notation is a way to represent big and small numbers with only a few symbols.
A number in scientific notation is written as the product of two factors.
First factor is less than 1 and second factor is a power of 10
Scientific notation for small numbers : Scientific notation for small numbers Small positive numbers less than 1 are written in scientific notation with negative powers of 10
Comparing Numbers and Amounts : Comparing Numbers and Amounts Use an = to show that numbers or amounts are equal
Use an ≠ to show that numbers or amounts are not equal
Use a > or< to show which one is larger or smaller.
Use the same unit when comparing
Factors : Factors A rectangular array is an arrangement of objects in rows and columns .Each row has the same number of objects and each column has the same number of objects.
Numbers can have more than one factor pair
To find the factors of a whole number is to find all the factor pairs for that number.
Divisibility : Divisibility When a counting number is divided by a counting number and the quotient is a counting number with a remainder of 0, then the first number is divisible by the second number.
