Why Go for Drum Lessons
There are drummers who usually shy away from the idea of taking drum lessons. The reason behind this seemingly toffee-nosed behavior varies, but there are a couple that stand out given that we level the playing field (that all these drummers have the money for enrollment; that all these drummers have the resources (own kit, a place to practice, etc.) needed to support their lessons; that all these drummers have the time to pursue the lessons and so on): either the drummer is afraid to fail his drumming course or the drummer is too proud that he thinks taking formal lessons will lessen his appeal of being a hard-rocking skinsman since he sought someone else’s assistance to hone his chops.
When you start nursing these thoughts against drumming lessons, then it is clearly a case of you losing at the ends of misinformation. Okay, let’s straighten out the record: there is no need to fear failing your lessons since, as they say, there is no way but up, regardless of how immense or how little your progress is and there is no need to be haughty and iffy about the tutorials since they, in the first place, are designed to help you become a better drummer.
So, really, why go for drum lessons? The answer can be summed up in one word: progress. If you register for a drumming course, you are provided the opportunity to have an in-depth study of the instrument and how to correctly play it. You will be exposed to different techniques that will help develop your own style of playing. Too, there are tips, which are usually taken for granted by most drummers (even some pros!), that you will be obliged to check from time to time since these tips can actually make a difference in your playing. For instance, the proper way of holding the sticks, the right manner of hitting the drums and cymbals, the way you breathe as you play, the method of tuning your drums, and even the method of setting up of your kit and throne.
Furthermore, in the advanced stages, you will get the chance to explore the different types of drumming, from rock to jazz to gospel and so on. And this is beneficial for you since it de-limits yourself from being just a one-trick pony drummer. As you go along, you will discover many useful fills that you can apply during performances. Moreover, as all these things happen, you get the chance to converse with a professional instructor who is meant to give you guidance. You see, this is where formal one-on-one lessons find their strength compared to learning the drums via instructional videos: if you do not have a mentor, you may end up learning the wrong technique, which is quite difficult to correct when you have already familiarized yourself with it.
