Slide21 : SIM Program in Chemical Metrology
In order to most effectively address the unique needs of all 34 countries
within SIM, whose capabilities in chemical metrology span a very broad
range, we have initially focused SIM Chemical Metrology Working
Group activities on training and capability assessment rather than
participation in MRA-driven Key and Supplemental Comparisons
This has been accomplished through:
Outreach and Awareness Activities within the ANDIMET CAMET, CARIMET and SURAMET Subregions
Chemical Measurement Proficiency Assessment Comparison Studies
and follow-up activities
Training in CMC preparation and review
Long-Term Goal: Improved capabilities in chemical metrology and Increased participation in CCQM and CIPM MRA-related activities
Past Activities: Chemistry Proficiency Assessment Studies : Past Activities: Chemistry Proficiency Assessment Studies
SIM Chemical Metrology Awareness Seminars : SIM Chemical Metrology Awareness Seminars General Format:
Plenary Lectures
Chemical Metrology and It’s Impact on Trade and Quality of Life
Current Worldwide Infrastructure for Facilitating Chemical Measurement Traceability/Comparability
Lectures Concerning Subregional needs for:
Clinical Diagnostics
Environmental Quality
Food Safety and Nutrition
Trade, etc.

Slide26 : Three Exercises
Cholesterol in Human Serum
Creatinine in Human Serum
Glucose in Human Serum
These three analytes were chosen because they
present different challenges for accurate measurements.
Cholesterol is lipophilic, glucose is highly water soluble,
and creatinine is present at much lower concentrations.
Ability to determine all of these accurately is evidence that
a laboratory has the capability to measure other well-defined
small organic molecules in serum. SIM.8.13P Clinical Diagnostic Markers
(Organized by NIST)
Guidelines for Participation in Follow- UP Comparisons on Cholesterol in Serum and Auto Emission Gases : Guidelines for Participation in Follow- UP Comparisons on Cholesterol in Serum and Auto Emission Gases Who can Participate:
Officially: SIM NMIs or their officially designated labs who are currently or will be providing reference
Measurement services within a given country; PTB and/or BAM
Unofficially : Other Labs who can contribute scientifically to study; these
activities are not open to Commercial Labs unless designated by the Country’s NMI.
Methods to be used:
Cholesterol: Regionally or Internationally-recognized “higher order methods (e.g. ID/MS or Abel
Kendall; use of other Methods possible, but justification should be provided); Commercial kit-based
methods are not higher order
Auto Emission Gases:No method(s) specified; but general approach should be based on comparison
of unknown against a primary gas mixture standard. Primary gas standard(s) can either be prepared in-
house or purchased from an NMI. Calibration with a standards obtained from a Specialty Gas Company is
not recommended.
When:
Cholesterol: July – September, 2005
Auto Emissions: Sometimes in 2005; to be done along with industrial emissions
Expected Outcome:
Measurement Capability assessment for providing national measurement services to facilitate Increased
participation of SIM Countries in CCQM activities and CIPM MRA
Slide28 : SIM has the majority (over 1200) of ~4000 QM CMCs for CIPM MRA Appendix C, but only from three institutions
Cycle 1: 850 QM CMCs for Gas Mixtures published – June 2001
SIM: 135 – NIST
Cycle 2: Over 1000 QM CMCs published in other Measurement Service Categories – March 2002

Cycle 3: Interregional Review of ~750 Chemistry CMCs for October 2002 meeting of the JCRB
SIM: 117 – NIST, CENAM
Cycle 4: ~370 CMCs submitted for Interregional Review for April 2003
SIM: 34 – NIST, CENAM
Cycle 5: 194 CMCs submitted for Interregional Review for April 2004
Submitted by SIM: 32 – CENAM

Program Impact : Program Impact Fifteen NMI’s or their designated labs within SIM are now regular participants in SIM intercomparison studies; up from three in 2002.
Seven countries are now participating in CCQM meetings and various activities; up from three (Canada, Mexico and U.S.) in 2002
Three countries (U.S., Canada, Mexico ) have CMCs in the BIPM Key Comparison Database; Brazil has submitted CMCs for review this current cycle and Argentina, Chile and perhaps Uruguay will submit during the upcoming cycle.

Theme: “Metrology the Foundation, ensuring the viability of nations”
Signing of the CIPM MRA by CARICOM (Associate Membership)

Conclusions : Conclusions The number of signatories is expected to increase in the near future.
SIM is taking actions to promote the CIPM MRA through Seminars aimed to create awareness in the authorities of the American Countries.
More technical work is needed to support the less developed countries and allow them to actively participate in the MRA.
