Understanding Scholarly Communication : Understanding Scholarly Communication Alfred Mowdood with examples from the work of U of U professors and researchers

Scholarly Information Cycle: Why re-invent the wheel?1 : Scholarly Information Cycle: Why re-invent the wheel?1 Researcher reads the literature. The researcher performs an experiment - builds upon previous research. The results of the experiment are written about and submitted to a journal. Peer review process - experts in the field review and suggest changes that the author must make before the article is published. 5. A journal article is published. The journal article is read by an indexer who assigns descriptors (subject headings) which capture the main idea(s) so it can be found in a journal index such as PubMed or SPORTDiscus 1 Image and text from BIO150Y Optimal Information Foraging Tutorial by BIO150Y staff. Characteristics of a Scholarly Journal : Characteristics of a Scholarly Journal The most common practice in communicating research is scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. Articles in scholarly journals present news and results of original research. Often published by an association or university. Indexed in library databases.

More Scholarly Journal Characteristics : More Scholarly Journal Characteristics Editors are researchers who have expertise in a specific area. Published a certain number of times a year. Identified by specific year and month/season and/or by volume and issue number. Journal titles change. Groups/organizations retitle journals to reflect: new focus, change in area of research, desire of group members, and changes in word meaning. Originally titled The Research Quarterly of the American Physical Education Association Marriott Library carries first volume & issue from 1930.

Expertise : Expertise Latin term curriculum vitae (often abbreviated CV) is used to document education, teaching, grants, service, and publications of researchers and university faculty Credentials which recognizes professional achievement and competence: FACSM RD Licensing Utah Physical Therapist Board

Peer Reviewed : Peer Reviewed Other experts in the discipline evaluate articles to be published in journal. To eliminate bias, the author’s identity is not revealed to reviewers (blind review process). Journals have rules in how articles must be submitted—APA style is common.

Typical First Page of a Scholarly Article : Typical First Page of a Scholarly Article Lists authors and their credentials. Provides summary of the article (abstract). In the text of article, references the work of others.
