Slide 2 : today we will: Learn about the Basic English Phonics Course
Review the Course Contents
Practice a few examples from the series
Slide 3 : This is a series of basic phonic tutorials for the beginning English student. It was designed for young ESL students who were learning to read in English. But I believe it is appropriate for any beginning English student.
Slide 4 : English has a 26 letter alphabet and 44 distinct sounds – consonants, vowels, consonant blends, and vowel combinations which provide the foundation for reading ability. These tutorials are a systematic introduction to the basics needed for reading English. Remember this is a phonics class. We are working on sounding out words. You will work on comprehension and vocabulary in a different class.
Slide 5 : Notes about this course:
There are 17 lessons in this course. This first lesson is a review of letters and sounds. After this, each lesson contains:
10 to 20 sight words
(these are words that don’t necessarily follow the rules, so they must be memorized)
Rhyming words related to the particular sound
Sentences which build on words previously introduced, while emphasizing the sound or letter for that step
Common endings such as ,-s, -ing, and -ed have been added to some words to make the sentences make sense. This usually is not a problem for the beginning student. Remember this is a phonics class. We are working on sounding out words.
You will work on comprehension and vocabulary in a different class.
