Many students of Soil Science, Agronomy, Horticulture etc. having deep interest in soil, plant, water, fertilizer analysis and its analytical techniques expressed the need for a comprehensive book in the above subject to the authors. The authors being devoted to teaching and research as well as to soil and plant analysis gradually took the work of preparing the manuscript. The present book contains nine chapters. The first chapter is devoted for principles of analytical chemistry, and the second is physical analysis of soil. The remaining chapters deal with the chemical analysis of soil, plant, plant tissues for immediate assessment of soil, Irrigation water and water pollutants, fertilizers & manures. It also includes chapter on instrumentation principles. Appendix, which is very useful & ready rackner to the students /teachers etc., includes convertion factors, laboratory guide, atomic weight and many more things. Each determination has been written under the headings: Principle, Reagents Equipments, Procedure, Calculations. Brief explanations of the important stages have also been included. Modification in the methods and calculations are made wherever felt necessary for providing better understanding. Hopefully, the technical information contained herein will prove useful to Agriculture graduates and post graduate students, scientists, teachers and analysts studying /working in the field of biological and applied sciences more specially in the field of Soil Science, Agronomy, Environmental Science, Plant science, Geology, Horticulture and Forestry. It will also prove as a tool for Soil Testing, Quality Control and Laboratories of related fields. Efforts are made to make this publication self explanatory and useful however, any suggestions for improvement will be highly appreciated Contents: Chapter -1 Analytical Chemistry : Basic Concept, Techniques and Importance 01 Chapter-2 Physical Analysis of Soil 09 Identification of Rocks and Minerals 09 Physical Properties 09 Common Rock Forming Silicate Minerals 11 Identification Criteria of Minerals 14 Soil Morphological Features: 18 Identification, Criteria and application Soil Horizon 18 Soil Colour and Mottling 24 Soil Texture 26 Soil Consistence 30 Soil Structure 31 Study of Soil Profile and Its characteristics 33 Soil sampling for physical Analysis 38 Bulk Density (Apparent specific gravity) 39 True Density or particle Density 40 Pore space 40 Aggregate Size Distribution 41 (A) Dry seiving 41 (B) Wet Seive Aggregate Analysis 41 Water Holding Capacity 42 Sticky Point 43 Moisture 44 Determination of Loss on Ignition 44 Infilleration Rate (A) Basin Method 45 (B) Cylinder Method 46 Field capacity of Soil 46 Soil Texture 48 (A) Rapid Feel Method. 48 (B) Mechanical Analysis of Soil 49 (i) International Pipette Method 50 (ii) Hydromether Method (Bouyoucos) 53 Soil Temperature 56 Soil Strength Molybederum 113 Interpretation of plant test results 113 Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) 114 Chapter -5 Rapid Test for Soil and Plant Tissue 115 Rapid Soil Testing 115 Plant Tissue Test 121 Chapter-6 Analysis of Irrigation Water 125 Collection of water sample 125 pH 126 Redox Patential 126 Soluble Salts 126 Determination of anions 127 Nitrogen 134 Determination of cations 135 Chapter-7 Major Water Pollutants 138 Introduction 138 Design of Analytical scheme for water analysis 139 Insitu Analysis 140 Study of properties of polluted water 140 Collection of the sample 141 Measurement of physical parameters 141 Measurement of chemical parameters 143 Total Alkalinity 143 Total Acidity 145 Dissolved carbon dioxide 147 Dissolved oxygen 147 Biological Oxygen Demand 149 Chemical Oxygen Demand 150 Ammonia Nitrate 152 Nitrite 152 Total Nitrogen 152 Phosphorus 153 Reactive Silica 153 Sulphate 153 Hydrogen Sulphide 154 Chloride 154 Hardness of Water 154 Calcium 155 Sodium and Potassium 155 Residual Chlorine 156 Oil and Grease 156 Volatile Acids 156 Iron 156 Arsenic 156 Chromium 156 Cadmium 157 Zinc 157 Mercury 157 Chapter-8 Analysis of Fertilizers and Manures 158 Identification of fertilizers ingredients 158 Sampling of fertilizer 159 Analysis of Nitrogenous Fertilizers 160 Determination of total Nitrogen in Urea 160 Determination of biuret in Urea 160 Ammoniacal nitrogen 161 Ammoniacal and Nitrate Nitrogen 162 Analysis of phosphatic fertilizer 164 Analysis of Superphosphate 164 Total phosphate 164 Water soluble phosphate 165 Calcium 165 Sulphate 166 Analysis of potassic fertilizers 167 Analysis of Organic Manures 168 Chapter-9 Instruments used in Soil, Plant and Water Analysis 170 pH meter 170 Conductivity Meter 174 Colorimeter 176 Spectrophotometer 177 Flame Emission Spectrophotometer or Flame photometer 178 Atomic absorption spectrophotometer 180 (10) Appendix-1 Laboratory Guide 184 (11) Appendix-2 Soil permeability 194 Infiltration Rate 194 Soil Texture 195 Soil Reaction 195 Soil Salinity 196 Soil Salinity based on Electrical conductivity 196 Gypsum status. 196 Gypsum requirement in relation to soil pH 197 (12) Appendix-3 Profile Development Rating 197 (13) Appendix-4 Soil fertility Rating and conversions 198 (14) Appendix-5 Derived units 199 Prefixes and symbols that Indicates Multiples of SI units. 199 Common conversion of non-SI units to SI-units and some constants 200 Some other special conversions 201 Conversion factors : 201 (15) Appendix-6 Volumetric factors. 204 (16) Appendix-7 Strength of common acids used in Laboratories 205 (17) Appendix-8 Some Approximate pH Values 206 (18) Appendix -9 Setting requirement of atomic absorption spectrophotometer for various element207 (19) Appendix-10 Procedures for preparing standard solutions 208 (20) Appendix-11 Nutrient Content in Fertilizers 209 (21) Appendix-12 Nutrient Content in Manure 211 (22) Appendix-13 Table of Relative Atomic Weights 213 (23) References 215 (24) Acknowledgement 218 About the Author SARVESH KUMAR DUBEY born on 24 May 1960, did his B.Sc (Ag) Hons and M.Sc (Ag) in Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry.
