Zakaah : Zakaah
The five pillars of Islam : The five pillars of Islam The Prophet (SAWS) said:
“Islam has been built (by Allah) upon five: The testimony
(Shahaadah) that none has the right to be worshipped
except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger
of Allah (Laa ilaaha ill‐Allah, Muhammad‐ur‐
Rasoolullaah); establishing Salaah, giving Zakaah, Fasting
(Sawm) the month of Ramadan, and performing Hajj
to the House [of Allah] (the Ka’bah).” (Bukhari and Muslim)
Benefits & Importance of Zakah : Benefits & Importance of Zakah "Take Sadaqah (obligatory charity) from their wealth in order to purify them and
sanctify them with it, and invoke Allah for them. Verily, your invocations are a
source of security for them, and Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.“(Surah At-Taubah [9:103])

“O child of Adam! Spend in charity and We (Allah) will spend on you.”

Importance of Zakah : Importance of Zakah “------And those who hoard up gold and silver [al‐kanz: the money, the Zakaah of which has not been paid], and spend it not in the Way of Allah, ‐ announce unto them a painful torment. “(Surah At-Taubah’ [9:34])
Importance of Zakah : Importance of Zakah On the Day when that (al‐kanz: money, gold and silver, etc., the Zakaat of which has not been paid) will be heated in the Fire of Hell and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, (and it will be said unto them): ‘This is the treasure which you hoarded for yourselves. Now taste of what you used to hoard’. “(Surah At-Taubah’ [9:35])
Importance of Zakah : Importance of Zakah This has been indicated in the saheeh hadeeth in which the Prophet (SAWS) said:
“No owner of gold or silver who does not offer its due right (Zakaah) except that in the Day of Judgement, plates of fire will be beaten out for him, and they will be heated in the Fire of Jahannam (Hell) and their flanks, foreheads, and their backs will be branded with them. Whenever they will cool, it will be done again to them, on a Day of which its length is fifty thousand years, until [Allah] judges between all [His] slaves. He will see his path, either to Jannah (Paradise), or to Jahannam.” (Muslim)
Benefits & Importance of Zakah : Benefits & Importance of Zakah It has also been authentically reported (Al‐Bukhaari) of the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) that he said:
“Whomever Allah has provided with wealth and does
not offer the Zakaah due upon it, on the Day of Judgement
it will be made into a baldheaded poisonous male
snake with two black spots over the eyes. The snake will
encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, ‘I am your wealth, I am your hoarded treasure!’
The Prophet (SAWS) then recited Allah’s saying:
Benefits & Importance of Zakah : Benefits & Importance of Zakah ‘And let not those who covetously withhold of that which Allah has bestowed on them of His Bounty (Wealth) think that it is good for them (and so they do not pay the obligatory Zakaah). Nay, it will be worse for them; the things which they covetously withheld shall be tied to their necks like a collar on the Day of Resurrection……..’ (Surah Aali-Imran [3:180])
Who is required to pay Zakaah? : Who is required to pay Zakaah?
Nisaab : Nisaab Muslims who own a minimum amount of extra wealth (referred to as Nisab) beyond the necessities of life, such as food, clothing, places of residence, means of transportation and the tools necessary for work.
The Nisab is free from debts and thus is not owed to debtors.
Nisaab should have passed 1 year : Nisaab should have passed 1 year A full year has passed (hawl) since one had possession of the minimum amount of wealth liable for payment of the Zakat. However, fruits and vegetables are not included in this ruling.
Nisaab of Silver & Gold : Nisaab of Silver & Gold The Prophet (Peace be upon Him), said:
"There is no charity on what is less than five Uqiyyah (of silver),” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
(Note: One Uqiyyah of silver is 147 grams, thus five Uqiyyahis equal to 735 grams.)
The nisaab for gold is 20 miskals, which is equal to 11 3/7 pounds, equal to 92 grams.
Amount to pay Zakah for Silver & Gold : Amount to pay Zakah for Silver & Gold If the gold is above 92 grams then the amount to pay will be 2.5% of the market value of gold in possession.
If the silver is above 735 grams then the amount to pay will be 2.5% of the market value of silver in possession.
Example:-
For 92 grams of gold Zakat amount will be equivalent to 2.3 grams.
For 735 grams of silver Zakat amount will be equivalent to 18.4 grams.
Zakaah on Jewelry used for beautification : Zakaah on Jewelry used for beautification The Prophet (SAWS) said: "Anyone who owns gold or silver and does not pay Zakat on them, on the Day of Resurrection they will be made into plates of fire and they will then bum his sides, forehead and back.” (Muslim)
The Prophet (SAWS) also asked a woman whose daughter was wearing two gold bracelets, if she had paid the Zakat on them. When the woman replied that she had not, the Prophet (SAWS) said: "Would you be pleased to have Allah make two bracelets of fire from them on the Day of Judgement?” (Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i and graded as good)
Zakaah on Jewelry used for beautification : Zakaah on Jewelry used for beautification If the woman does not have means of her own income to give Zakah then she has to give it after selling the part of her jewelry or any other things in her possession.
A husband can give sadaqah to wife for her to give Zakaah.
Or she can give Zakaah from the pocket money provided by husband.
Nisaab of Paper Currency : Nisaab of Paper Currency If its value reaches the nisaab of silver or gold and it is in a person’s possession for a period of one year, Zakaah becomes due upon it. (The book of Zakah, Shaikh Abdul Azeez Ibn Baaz)
The amount to pay for such a nisaab will also be 2.5%
Nisaab of Investments / Property : Nisaab of Investments / Property Samurah narrated: “The Messenger of Allah (SAWS) would order us to give Zakaah for our commodities which we own in order to sell (to trade with).” (Abu Dawud)
Some examples of commodities which are included in this ruling are as follows:
1. Land which one buys and sells,
2. Buildings, 3. Cars,
4. Machines which lift water,
5. All other commodities which one owns in order to sell.
Zakaah on Property rented out : Zakaah on Property rented out Property which one owns and gives out on rent but
does not sell, Zakaah is due upon its rent, if it is in his possession for a year [after having reached the nisaab]. As for its value, there is no Zakaah upon it, for it is not owned in order to sell.
The amount to pay for such a nisaab will also be 2.5%
Zakaah on Fruits & Grains : Zakaah on Fruits & Grains And He it is who causes gardens to grow, [both] trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and crops of different [kinds of] food and olives and pomegranates, similar and dissimilar. Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvest. And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess.(6:141)
Nisaab for Fruits & Grains : Nisaab for Fruits & Grains Allah's Messenger (SAWS) said: "On a land irrigated by rain water or by natural water channels or land that is wet due to a nearby water channel. One-tenth (10%) is compulsory (as Zakat); on the land irrigated by a well. half of a tenth (5%) is compulsory (as Zakat on the yield of the land).” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
He (SAWS) also said: "There is no Zakat due on what is less than five Wasaqs (of grains or vegetation)."

(Note: Five Wasaqs are approximately 900 kg; One Wasq = 60 Sa` of measured grain.)
Amount to pay Zakah for Fruits & Grains : Amount to pay Zakah for Fruits & Grains If the crop is watered without much effort, such as by spring water or by rain, it requires one-tenth (10%) as Zakat payment.
If such produce is watered with effort. such as from wells or irrigation channels, it requires a half of a tenth (5%) as Zakat payment.
Allah's Messenger (SAWS) said: "On a land irrigated by rain water, or by natural water channels, or if the land is wet due to a nearby water channel, one-tenth is compulsory (as Zakat). On the land irrigated by a well, half of one tenth is compulsory (as Zakat on the yield of the land),” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Wealth that do not require Zakaah : Wealth that do not require Zakaah The Money that does not Reach the Amount of Nisab
Allah's Messenger (SAWS) said: "There is no Zakat on less than five Wasaqs (approximately 900 kilograms of grain). There is no Zakat on less than five Uqiyyah of silver (735 grams). And there is no Zakat on less than five camels (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
There is no Zakaah on any precious stones, such as pearls, diamonds and so forth that are used for beautification purposes. Therefore, any necklaces, bracelets broaches or rings that are made of materials other than gold and silver do not require payment of Zakat.
Wealth that do not require Zakaah : Wealth that do not require Zakaah Any personal items such as cars, furniture, rugs, home etc. does not carry Zakaah.

Recipients of Zakaah : Recipients of Zakaah As-Sadaqat (Zakat) are only for the Fuqara' (poor), and Al-Masakin (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds); and for to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allah's Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun - those fighting in the holy wars), and for the wayfarer (a traveller who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.(Surah At-Taubah [9:60])

For: to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam)

Zakaat-ul-Fitr : Zakaat-ul-Fitr
Zakaat-ul-Fitr : Zakaat-ul-Fitr One of the Prophet's Companions named Ibn 'Umar, (RA), said: "Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon Him) enjoined the payment of one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakatul-Fitr on every Muslim, slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the 'Eid prayer."

Note: One saa’ is equal to about 3 kilograms of rice.
Wisdom behind Zakaat-ul-Fitr : Wisdom behind Zakaat-ul-Fitr One of the Prophet's Companions named Ibn 'Abbas, (RA), said: "The Messenger of Allah enjoined Zakatul-Fitr as a redemption for the fasting person from unnecessary or foul speech and as a food for the poor."

When should Zakaat-ul-Fitr be given : When should Zakaat-ul-Fitr be given The best time to pay Zakatul-Fitr is the time from dawn on 'Eid Day (the first day of the month following Ramadhan) until just before the 'Eid prayer. However, those who give it before the morning of the 'Eid (i.e. a day or two before the 'Eid) have properly fulfilled the obligation. Those who give it away after the 'Eid prayer, it is considered as a voluntary charity (Sadaqah) only. In other words it is not counted as Zakatul-Fitr.
