I was struck by his discussion of how unresolved issues in the counselor can interfere with the counseling process. I could relate to the section on “unresolved authority issues.” Even though I am 20 years old and will be totally financially independent from my parents in 2 years. I still feel like a kid when I’m around “authority figures.” Last semester a professor made a mistake in grading one of my tests and I was way too nervous about speaking to him about it. I wasn’t sure what I would do if he didn’t admit his mistake. I worried that I would either be too nervous to stand up for myself or go overboard and lose my temper. I ended up avoiding the whole situation by doing extra credit to make up for the points I lost due to his error. I’m feeling kind of embarrassed to write this. I’m not proud that I couldn’t stand up for myself. Anyhow, I bet I would have trouble counseling someone my parents’ age. Well, maybe not women so much as men… Yeah, I think my “authority issues” stem from growing up with my Dad’s explosive temper. He never hit anything, or us but he would threaten it. I also hated to disappoint him. I lived for my Dad to be proud of me and pat me on the back once in awhile. I think I’ll need to work on this more before I could feel able to be a therapist for an older man. I’d need to look out for trying to please them. I think my need to feel approval from my older male clients would definitely impede my progress with them. Chapter 14 talks about this, but he doesn’t say what a counselor should do about (besides avoiding certain clients). I guess counseling for me? Or maybe trying to talk to my Dad? My older brother is a minister and he does some counseling. I wonder if this issue has ever been a problem for him? Name: ________________________ Chapter Topics: ______________________
