3rd Declension Nouns & GenderIt's so overwhelming to see all those rules about gender in the 3rd Dec,so here's a general principle about 3rd declension gender which helps onekeep all these "rules" straight:In general 3rd Dec nouns which signify concepts are feminine, while nouns that represent tangible things are masculine. And yet still, the obvious male or female persons fall into their obvious categories first. Of course, there are a few exceptions. Here are some examples:Masculine--mons, montis-mountaincollis, collis -hilldens, dentis -toothlapis, lapidis -stoneFeminine--veritas, veritatis -truthvirtus, virtutis -virtue/manlinessquies, quietis -stillness/quiet*********************************************Here are 2 examples of related words and how this concept works: vertex, verticis -whirlpool/eddyvertigo, vertiginis -turning/dizzinessThe 1st one is masculine (it is the actual, tangible whirlpool)the 2nd one is feminine (it is the concept of turning)*********************************************
