Name: Paul Thomas Lesson Plan Date: June 4, 2007 Level: 2H/3L Room: BG02 Time: 8:30-10:10 Target Language: Structure: Past simple and present perfect with “ever” Rules: Past simple is used for actions which began and ended in the past. Present perfect is used, among other things, for actions which began in the past and continue in the present or for actions in the past which have some present relevance. Ever is usually used only in questions and negative sentences. The only time ever is ever used in positive sentences is for emphasis. Examples: Guy had his first hit record in 1985. I have taught English for eleven years. Have you ever been to Europe? I haven’t ever been to Europe. That is the ugliest dog I have ever seen. Aims: Main aim: For Ss to learn, review and practice past simple, present perfect and when to use “ever”. Sub-aims: Listening and speaking: For Ss to improve their listening and speaking skills concerning past simple and present perfect. Vocabulary: For Ss to learn and practice using music and band vocabulary. Form: For students to review how the past simple and present perfect are formed. Personal aims: To foster interest and participation in the class. To give clear instructions and to concept check instructions, vocabulary and grammar rules. Materials/Aids: Headway Elementary Student’s Book, p. 57 Headway Elementary tapescript, T 7.6 Headway Elementary Teacher’s Book, pp. 60, 61 & 62 Whiteboard Anticipated Problems: Ss might not be familiar with why or when we use past simple and present perfect. Ss might use ever in positive sentences. Solutions: Concept check the forms and meanings of past simple and present perfect. Present ever as used in questions and negative sentences. Present ever as used for emphasis in positive sentences. T asks Ss, “If you could meet your favorite band or singer, what would you ask them?” T tells Ss that they are going to listen to an interview with two musicians, Suzie and Guy, from the band Style. T asks Ss to fill out the chart on page 57 in the student book. T asks Ss to put an S for Suzie and a G for guy in columns 1 and 2, What do they do in the band? and Bands they have played with. T asks Ss to put a check mark for yes and an X for no in column 3, Places they have visited. T checks to make sure Ss are familiar with the music vocabulary. T plays tapescript T 7.6 When Ss are finished listening, T puts them in pairs and has them check their answers together. T repeats this process until Ss feel they have the correct answers. T checks Ss’ answers orally. T asks Ss to answer a series of questions about Suzie and Guy while they listen to the interview again. T checks to make sure Ss understand the questions. T plays tapescript T 7.6 again. When Ss are finished listening, T has them work in pairs and check their answers. T repeats this process until Ss feel they have the correct answers. T checks Ss’ answers orally. T asks Ss to write sentences about Suzie and Guy using the phrases in the box in exercise 4. T tells Ss to look at the tapescript on pages 122 and 123 as a reference. When Ss are finished, T checks their answers orally. T asks Ss what tense the verbs in columns A and B are. Answers – A past simple B present perfect T concept checks these tenses to make sure Ss understand them. T has Ss work in pairs and ask each other the questions in exercise 5. T checks to make sure Ss know what the missing words in the questions are. Ss ask each other the questions. Teacher has Ss work in two groups, one of 5 Ss and one of 3 Ss. T tells the group of 5 to imagine that they are musicians in a band and gives them a series of questions to think about concerning their roles in the band, their style of music, etc. T tells the group of 3 to imagine that they are journalists and they are going to interview the band and has them practice the same questions.
