Outline for Teaching Statement paper
General [at least 400 words for non-doctoral students and at least 600 words for doctoral students]: general thoughts about your teaching approach/ philosophy … information such as understanding yourself as a teacher, understanding your students (potential students), and defining yourfor aims and outcomes [based on “questions” in Joy of Teaching].
Specific [approximately 600-1,100 words for non-doctoral students and 900-1,400 words for doctoral students]: Reflect about aspects of teaching that are most applicable to your teaching (such as discussion or motivating students). In choosing what aspects you will reflect upon, review the topics covered each week. You may have to decide between broad and detailed. If you go broad, be careful not to be too superficial.
Some Guidelines in Addition to Those Provided in Project Description
For purposes of this course, in this reflection, you are to relate content in your statement to class readings. In addition, if you use your own discussion postings, you do not need to give credit, but if you use discussion responses of other students, give credit and use quotation marks unless you paraphrase (which also requires giving credit). Try to follow the word lengths given. If you go some beyond the word length but are not wordy or repetitious, you will not be penalized; however, you will not receive extra credit should you exceed the word lengths.
For students who have not taught,
Address areas that you have gathered will be important when you teach. You can relate theory and hypothesize on what approaches might work best for you. Provide reasons why: what personal characteristics suggest an approach might be more suitable for you than others.
Apply information to a work environment.
