ACTIVE VOICE AND PASSIVE VOICE : 1. Read the following two sentences: John plays football. Football is played by John. There is no difference in the meanings of these two sentences. But in the first sentence, the subject acts. While in the second sentence the subject is acted upon. ACTIVE VOICE AND PASSIVE VOICE

2.When to use the passive voice : 2.When to use the passive voice When the action is more important than the subject is. When the subject is unknown or insignificant. In objective reporting or scientific process. e.g. My pen has been stolen. English is spoken all over the world

.RULES FOR CHANGING ACTIVE VOICE INTO PASSIVE VOICE : .RULES FOR CHANGING ACTIVE VOICE INTO PASSIVE VOICE Object or object group in the active verb is made the subject of the passive verb. Subject of the active verb is made the object of some preposition (generally by ) Use p.p. of the active verb and to be before p.p. Vague and indefinite subjects (everyone, they, people, someone, somebody, etc.) should be dropped

NEGATIVE SENTENCES : NEGATIVE SENTENCES I do not read a book. A book is not read by me. He does not love me. I am not loved by him. We do not teach you. You are not taught by us. He does not fly a kite. A kite is not flown by him.

INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES : INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES Do I read a book ? Is a book read by me ? Does he love me? Am I loved by him ? Do we teach you ? Are you taught by us ?

NEGATIVE- INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES : NEGATIVE- INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES Do I not read a book? Is a book not read by me? Do you not eat bread ? Is bread not eaten by you ? Do we not teach you ? Are you not taught by us.

WH- QUESTIONS : WH- QUESTIONS What do you do ? What is done by you ? Who helps you ? By whom are you helped? What do you write? What is written by you ?

EXERCISE : EXERCISE What do you play ? Do you know me ? We respect our teachers. Who teaches you English ? What do you want ? He does not keep his room clean.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE : PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE Active: - S+is,am,are +v1ing+object passive: - o +is being +p.p. +by subject

PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE : PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES I am writing a letter. A letter is being written by me. We are teaching you. You are being taught by us. I am helping you. You are being helped by me.

NEGATIVE SENTENCES : NEGATIVE SENTENCES active :- He is not eating bread. Passive:- Bread is not being eaten by him. Active: - He is not playing football. Passive: - Football is not being played by him. Active: - My mother is not cooking food. Passive : - Food is not being cooked by my mother.

INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES : INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES active: - Am I reading a book ? Passive: - Is a book being read by me ? Active : - Are you helping him ? Passive : -Is he being helped by you ? Active : - Is she writing a letter ? Passive : - Is a letter being written by her ?

EXERCISE : EXERCISE We are taking tea. I am not doing my sums. Is he scolding you ? Who is annoying you ? Are they not beating you ? Why are you not running a race ?
