RECONCILIATION (JAMʿ) Method of the ḥadīth scholars 1. Reconciliation (jamʿ) 2. Abrogation (naskh) 3. Preference (tarjīḥ) 4. Neutrality (tawaqquf) Imam al-Nawawī (d. 677/1277) defined mukhtalif al-ḥadīth as follows: The mukhtalif ḥadīth are of two types: (1) that which can be reconciled; reconciliation is necessary and both texts should be used (2) that which cannot be reconciled at all; if one of the two conflicting texts is known to be the abrogating one (nāsikh), it should receive preference over the other, if this [abrogation] is not the case the one text should be preferred over the other such as using the characteristics of the narrators and their number to achieve this from among the fifty [or more] ways available.
