THM SADAQA GROUP ACADEMICS 2009 Physical Science Exam Chapters 1-8 Introduction to Physical Science Saddiqua Muhammad Black WWW.THMSADAQAGROUP.ORG The results of this 3-part exam series will determine if your child is ready for the Introduction to Biology Course inshaAllah. Please make sure that you attend each scheduled test session. Scores will be assessed 7 days after the completion of the series. To take this test you must request testing appointments. You must be in 9th Grade or Higher. Physical Science Exam Academic Studies | THM Sadaqa Group, Inc Grade________/Possible Points Instructions  You will have 2-hours to complete this test.  It is included in the 30% of your final grade.  Read and answer each question carefully.  You may use a textbook or notes to assist you.  Scheduled dates for exam: Thursday, December 3, 2009 Circle the letter of the correct answer. 1. Which of the following would a scientist use to measure the mass of a pencil? A. barometer B. spectroscope C. balance 2. Which of the following units would a scientist use to measure the volume of water in a pond? A. nanometer B. decimeter C. Kiloliter 3. Which of the following would be used to measure the length of a baseball bat? A. balance B. meter stick C. graduate 4. When the mercury in the tube of a barometer is falling, it mostly likely means that changes are occurring in the: A. temperature of the mercury B. PH of the mercury C. air pressure around the tube 5. To identify the elements that make up a piece of rock, a physical scientist would most likely use a: A. spectroscope B. Crooke’s tube C. barometer Circle true or false. 6. True False a car moving down a road, would be an example of kinetic energy. 7. True False one of the purposes for creating a graph is so that you can observe matter. 8. True False The following number can be written in scientific notation, 3000 9. True False one of the differences between matter and energy is that only matter can be touched. 10. True False Interpolation and extrapolation are used in measurement to find information between and beyond values that are known. Skills/Classification Scientists define matter as anything that occupies space and has mass. These two properties of matter are incorporated into a ratio called density. Density is often used to identify substances. If the density of a substance is compared to the density of water the ratio that results is called specific gravity. Specific gravity is often used to determine if a substance will float or sink in water. If the specific gravity of a substance is less than 1.0, the substance will float in water. If the specific gravity of a substance is greater than 1.0 the substance will sink. The following equations are used in computing density and specific gravity. D = M ÷ V V = M ÷ D M = V × D In the formulas, D stands for density (g/cm³), M stands for mass (g), and V stands for volume (cm³). specific gravity = density of substance÷ density of water Write a brief response to each question or statement. 11. In order to determine the density of a substance, which formula should be used if the values for mass and volume are known? 12. If the specific gravity of a substance is known, how could the density of that substance be determined? 13. Water expands when it freezes. Explain how this is different from the general trend of solids having higher densities than liquids. 14. List four physical properties of solids. 15. What is the density of a substance that has a mass of 36.9 g and a volume of 3.0 cm³? How Atoms are represented The periodic "law" of chemistry recognizes that many properties of the chemical elements are periodic functions of their atomic number (the number of protons within the element's atomic nucleus). The periodic table is an arrangement of the chemical elements ordered by atomic number in columns (groups) and rows (periods) presented so as to emphasize their periodic properties. Write your answers in the spaces provided below. 16. Identify the element that each of the following symbols represents. C, H, Na, N 17. Locate the following elements in the Periodic Table and complete the chart below. Element Symbol Atomic Number Group Period Oxygen Iron Helium 18. What is a chemical symbol? 19. What were the main points of Dalton’s atomic theory? Example of Water 1 20. Describe the electron cloud model of an atom. 21. Match the items on the left with the answers on the right. 1. Metal 2. Non-Metal 3. Noble Gas 4. Metalloid A. Sulfur (S) B. Argon (Ar) C. Sodium (Na) D. Silicon (Si) Write an essay in which you develop your point of view about the stated issue. 22. What is a compound? Define a compound and provide two examples. 23. Describe how compounds and elements are related. 24. How do Ionic bonds form? 25. How does a solute differ from a solvent? 26. Define single replacement reactions, double replacement reactions and then provide an example of each type of replacement reaction and write their equation. 27. How does Hydrogen chloride HCl (g), dissociate in water, to form the solution of hydrochloric acid? 28. What kind of acid is found in volcanic smoke, tomatoes, and rain? 29. What is a corrosive acid? Give an example. The results of this 3-part exam series will determine if your child is ready for continuance in the Biology or Chemistry Course inshaAllah. Please make sure that you attend each scheduled test session. Scores will be assessed 7 days after the completion of the series. Pre-Midterm 30%, Midterm 30%, and the Final 40% for a total of 100.
