SYNOPTIC GOSPELS : SYNOPTIC GOSPELS Rev. Jose A. Gonzalez
Design: Rev. Bro. Shawn Fulton
Synoptic Gospels Power Point Presentation : Synoptic Gospels Power Point Presentation Jesus asks “Who do you say I am?”
Disciples : Disciples Jesus walks to the edge of the water where men are working on their boat
Simon and his brother Andrew become the first two disciples to be picked
Further down he sees his next two James and his brother John like Simon and Andrew are told Follow me by Our Lord
During his ministry Simon, James and John would be Our Lords confidants
When he went off these three would go with him (house of the synagogue official, Mount of Olives, or the Mount for the Transfiguration)
After returning to Capernaum word got out that Jesus was back
The crowd following him got larger
Disciples cont. : Disciples cont. If he was seen or should he run into an unclean spirit or spirits they would fall down and shout “You are the Son of God” Mk 3:11
Jesus went up the mountain and while there he calls Phillip, Bartholomew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddeus, Simeon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot
These men with Simon, Andrew, James, John and Levi would be his Apostles
Simon has his name changed to Peter by Jesus
Disciples cont. : Disciples cont. Four men carrying a paralytic not being able to get through the door make a hole in the roof to lower the man down
Jesus seeing their faith tells him ”child you sins are forgiven” Mk 2:5
Scribes who were present were astounded how dare he! Only God could forgive this was blasphemy to them
Jesus leaves the house with his men going down the road they pass a customs post
Jesus spots Levi and says to him “follow me” he becomes the fifth disciple later to be known as Matthew
Jesus with a large crowd following with his men takes to a boat
Scribes and Pharisees would not leave him alone
Questioning everything from fasting, or his disciples picking grain on the Sabbath, or the man with the withered hand he healed in the synagogue during Sabbath services
People from Galilee and Judea made the crowd even larger as Jesus and his men head back to the sea
Slide 6 :
Apostles : Apostles Returning home with his Apostles and a very large crowd the scribes in the presence of everyone there claim Jesus is Beelzebul and driving demons out by the Prince of demons
To his men he gives this parable “if a kingdom is divided against itself that kingdom cannot stand” Mk 3:23
He goes on to say “if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided he cannot stand” Mk 3:26
Jesus finished by saying “whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness but is guilty of an everlasting sin” Mk 3:29
He goes on with the parables the Sower, the lamp, the seed that grows itself, and the mustard seed
Slide 8 :
Apostles cont. : Apostles cont. In the evening Jesus tells them to cross the Sea to the other side
Falling asleep in the boat he is awakened by his men they are in a panic because of a violent storm
Filled with great awe the twelve watch as the sea calm and the rain stops and they ask themselves who then is this whom even the wind and sea obey? Mk 4:41
I think with a little disappointment our Lord asks “why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” Mk 4:35-40
Not sure how they are going feed fived thousand and at a later time four thousand they bring loaves and fishes to Jesus who blesses them
When they collect the fragments at one they collect 12 wicker baskets full of leftovers and the next one they collect seven, their faith still lacking the Apostles are amazed

Slide 11 :
Apostles cont. : Apostles cont. Having his men get in the boat and go ahead of him
In the evening the boat was a long way out on the water
Thinking they are seeing a ghost and crying out, Jesus speaks to them to calm them down and gets in the boat
They were completely astounded that he walked on the water
Jesus and his men were observed not to follow the laws on washing before meals
With a parable Jesus explains why
After they returned home and gotten away from the crowds the Apostles ask about the parable
I can hear some frustration when our Lord has to explain this yet again
“Are even you likewise without understanding? Do you not realize that everything that goes into a person from outside cannot defile since it enters not the heart but the stomach and passes out into the latrine?” Mk 7:18-19
“but what comes out of a person that is what defiles. From within people from the hearts comes evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All the evil comes from within and they defile.” Mk 7:20-23
Who do you say I am? : Who do you say I am? On the journey to Caesarea Philippi Jesus asked his men “who do people say that I am?” they replied “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others, one of the Prophets.”
Jesus asked them, “ But who do you say that I am?,” Peter, said to him in reply, “You are the Messiah.”
Jesus, warned them not to tell anyone about him. Mk 8:27-30
Apostles Mission begins : Apostles Mission begins With no more than one walking stick, the sandals on their feet, one tunic and nothing else
Jesus sends his men out two by two on their first mission
His instructions to them that a house they entered they were to stay there till they were ready to leave
If they were not welcomed or they would not listen they were to shake the dust off their feet
The Apostles set off preaching repentance
They drove out many demons
Anointed many with oil that were sick and cured them
Returning all that they had done the twelve reported to Jesus
Being advised the Apostles go by boat to try and find a deserted place where they could get some needed rest
The crowd seeing them leaving went ahead of them on foot getting there before them

Slide 16 :
Transfiguration of Jesus : Transfiguration of Jesus Peter, James and John witness the transfiguration of Jesus after he took them to the top of a high mountain
Peter, James and John see Moses and Elijah speaking with Jesus
Peter wants to make three tents one for Jesus, one for Moses, one for Elijah
He was not sure what to say as they were terrified
A cloud passes over from it they hear a voice say “this is my beloved son. Listen to him. “ Mk 9:7
When the three looked only Jesus was there
On the way back Our Lord charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead
When they came down from the mountain they were met by a father of a boy with a demon
Having learned that his disciples were not able to heal the boy Jesus says to them “ O faithless generation how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Jesus then asked to have the boy brought to him” Mk 9:19
Conclusions and Observations : Conclusions and Observations Seen from this point the disciples were a little slow to pick up what Our Lord was trying to teach them
A great change comes over them when the risen Lord comes and stands in their midst
After the Ascension and the Holy Spirit comes upon them they are able to go forth to teach, preach, heal the sick, drive out demons and raise the dead
It takes numerous attempts by Jesus to get them to understand the Power he was giving them by their faith in him
The Gospel, The Good News, The Life of the Messiah, Jesus the Christ
The Son of God!
