Possessive Pronouns : Possessive Pronouns We use the Possessive Pronouns when we want to substitute a group of words that are indicating a possession relation.
Possessive Pronouns are:
mine, his, hers, ours, theirs, yours, its.
Example:
These glasses are mine, not yours.
the words mine and yours are possessive pronouns and stand for my glasses and your glasses. These glasses are my glasses, not your glasses.
Possessive adjectives : Possessive adjectives Possessive adjectives, also known as possessive determiners, are a part of speech that modifies a noun by attributing possession (or other sense of belonging) to someone or something.
possessive adjectives include:
my, his, her, your, our, their, its.
Example:
Paul hit his head on the table.
Possessive pronouns vs. possessive adjectives : Possessive pronouns vs. possessive adjectives possessive pronouns include:
mine, his, hers, ours, theirs, yours, its.
possessive adjectives include:
my, his, her, your, our, their, its.
The terms its and his can stand either as possessive pronouns or possessive adjectives
*Note : Possessive pronouns are very similar
to possessive adjectives.
Example: Possessive pronouns vs. possessive adjectives : Example: Possessive pronouns vs. possessive adjectives Example:
The car is Sally’s.
If we want to substitute in a possessive pronoun to replace the noun Sally’s, we’d merely write:
The car is hers. (Possessive pronoun)
This is clearly a possessive pronoun since we have taken out the possessive noun Sally’s and replaced it with hers.
For possessive adjective, we might write:
That is her car. (Possessive adjective)
Suddenly, instead of using a pronoun, we have used her to modify and further describe the noun car, Her is an adjective in this case, indicating possession.
Possessive Nouns : Possessive Nouns To make a possessive ask :
“Who (or What) does it belong to?”
If the answer ends in s, just add an apostrophe.
If it doesn’t end in s, add an apostrophe and s. (‘s)
Examples:
One boys bike (who does the bike belong to?) Boy add ‘s
One boy’s bike
Two boys bike (who does the bike belong to?) Boys
Two boys’ bike
Possessive using Of : Possessive using Of We use of to show possessive
Examples:
The book of my brother.
The pen of my sister.
I threw a ball over the fence of my
