And none receive admonition except men of understanding. * (They say): 'Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. And we extract from this verse, the words ت } / ا( م( ك8 ح3 م } and { ت/ ا( ه& اب ( ش(ت3 م } and { غ/ 8ي( { ز And the words ت } / ا( م( ك8 ح3 م } and { ت/ ا( ه& اب ( ش( مت3 } are the plurals of م } / ( ك8 مح3 } and { ه& اب ( ش( مت3 { And they are from the verbs } ( م( ك8 ح(أ } and { ( ه( اب ( ش(ت } and { ( اغ ( { ز And from the roots ح -ك -م } } and { ش -ب -ه } and { { ز -ي -غ And the linguistic meaning of { م/ ( ك8 ح3 م } is: ن } / ( ق8ت3 م } and { ق/ ق,( د3 { م precise and exactAnd the linguistic meaning of { ه/ & اب ( ش(ت3 م } is: س } / &ب(ت8 مل3 } and { ل/ & ك8 ش3 { م ambiguous and obscure And the linguistic meaning of { غ/ 8ي( ز } is: ل } / 8ي( م } and { ف/ ا( ر& ح8ن& { ا deviation and digression And their meanings according to the Sharee'ah are: (As-Sa'dee) Al-Qur'aan Al-'Adheem (i.e. The Mighty/Majestic/Magnificent/Exalted/Sublime/Glorious Qur'aan), all of it, in its entirety, is clear and precise. As Allaah -ta'aalaa -states: } ª ير fبe خ ª يم f كe ح g دنl لh ن f م g تe صلi l م ف h l ث l هl ات e آي g تe مf كg أحl ب s اeتf { ك "(This is) a Book, the Verses whereof are perfected (in every sphere of knowledge), and then explained in detail from One (Allâh), Who is All-Wise and Well-Acquainted (with all things)." (Hud 11:1) So it (i.e. the Qur'aan) is comprised of the utmost degree of perfection, precision, accuracy, balance and proficiency. } e نون lf يوق l ª مg وe لقi ا ] مg كl ح f لهk ال e نf م l نe سg حe أ g نe مe { و “And who is better in judgment than Allâh for a people who have firm Faith." (Al-Maa'idah 5:50) And all of its parts resemble one another in excellence, eloquence and authenticity, and in the congruity and conformity of its wording and meanings with one another. As for the clarity and resemblance that is being referred to in this verse, then the Qur'aan is as Allaah has mentioned: ت } s اe مe كg حl ت م s اe آي l هgنf { م “In it are Verses that are entirely clear." Meaning: Those (verses) which are clear and precise in their meaning and are devoid of any obscurity or ambiguity. } f اب eتf كg م ال y أl ن h l { ه "They are the foundations of the Book."Meaning: The foundation of the Qur'aan, to which all of those verses that are not entirely clear refer back. And these clear verses make up the majority of the Qur'aan. }e { و "and" in it are verses ت } s اe هf اب e شeتl م l رe أخl { "others not entirely clear" Meaning: The reality of their entire meaning is obscure and ambiguous to the minds and intellects of many or, that which some perceive to be the meaning is not what is intended (by the verse). So in brief, what can be understood from this is that, of the verses of the Qur'aan, there are those that are clear and unambiguous to everyone who reads them; and these verses make up the majority of the Qur'aan and are those verses to which one refers back. At the same time, of the verses of the Qur'aan, there are those that are not entirely clear and that are difficult to understand for some of the people. And so, that which is binding in the case of these verses, is that one refers them back to those verses which are clear, and that one refers back that which is unknown to that which is known and apparent. And in this manner, it will be found that the various parts of the Qur'aan verify and confirm one another, and that there does not occur within it contradiction nor opposition. But rather, the people are divided into two groups: غ } s gيe ز g مf هf لوب ll ي ق f ف e ين f لذh ما ا h eأe { ف "So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth)" Meaning: A deviation from that which is upright and sound in order that their intentions are corrupted, thus their end goal, their objective is transgression and straying from the truth. And their hearts turn away from the path of right guidance and from that which appeals to good sense and sound judgment. } l هgنf م e هe اب e شe ا ت e م e ون l عf تبheيe { ف "they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof" Meaning: They abandon that which is clear and unambiguous for what is unclear and ambiguous. So they reverse the affair, referring what is clear back to what is unclear. (Ibn Katheer) Allaah informs us that in the Qur'aan, there are verses which are entirely clear and these verses are the foundation of the Book. And what is meant by "entirely clear" is those verses that are clear and precise in their meaning and which do not contain any ambiguity or obscurity in the way of any person understanding them. At the same time, there are from the Qur'aan other verses which contain ambiguity and obscurity in the way of many of the people understanding them or some of the people understanding them. So the one who refers that which is ambiguous and not entirely clear back to that which is entirely clear and unambiguous and the one who makes those entirely clear verses the judge over those verses which are not entirely clear, then this person is rightly guided. But as for the one who does the opposite of this, then he is of those who are led astray and misguided. And because of this, Allaah states: } f اب eتf كg م ال y أl ن h l { ه "They are the foundations of the Book." Meaning: It's origin, basis and foundation, that which is referred back to whenever there occurs some ambiguity or obscurity in meaning. ت } s اe هf اب e شeتl م l رe أخl { و "and others not entirely clear" Meaning: From that which is possible is that their meanings are in agreement with those verses which are entirely clear and unambiguous [i.e. (( ات e مe كg حl الم )) Al-Muhkamaat]. While on the other hand, the literal composition and wording of these verses can imply something completely different from the intended meaning. And due to this, the scholars differed with regards to that which is meant by (( مe كg حl (( الم Al-Muhkam and that which is meant by (( هf اب µe شeتl الم )) Al-Mutashaabih. And many statements have been narrated from the Salaf as regards this issue. So 'Aliyy bin Abee Talhah narrated from Ibn 'Abbaas -radiyallaahu 'anhumaa -that he stated: ات )) µe مe كg حl الم )) Al-Muhkamaat are those verses that abrogate other verses of the Qur'aan, and that which the Qur'aan contains of allowances and prohibitions, and that which it contains of rulings and regulations, all of which one is commanded with and which is acted upon." And it is also narrated from Ibn 'Abbaas that he stated: (( ات e مe كg حl (( الم Al-Muhkamaat are as Allaah has stated: ا } ]ئgيe ش f هf ب g كوا l f رg تشl ل h e أ g مl كgيeلe ع g مl بكye ر e رمh e ا ح e م l لgتe أ gاg وe ال e عe ت g لl { ق "Say (O Muhammad -sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam): "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited you from: Join not anything in worship with Him." (Al-An'aam 6:151) And those verses that come after it. And also His statement -ta'aalaa -: ه } l ياhf ل إ h f إ g وا l دlبg عe ل ت h e أ e بكye ى ر e ضeقe { و "And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him." (Al-Israa' 17:23) Up to the three verses that follow it.And Ibn Abee Haatim reported on the authority of Sa'eed bin Jubayr that he stated: My father narrated to us: Sulaymaan bin Harb narrated to us: Hammaad bin Zayd narrated to us from Ishaaq bin Suwayd that Yahyaa bin Ya'mar and Abaa Faatihah consulted one another regarding this verse: ت } s اe هf اب e شeتl م l رe أخl و f اب eتf كg م ال y أl ن h l { ه "They are the foundations of the Book. And others not entirely clear." So, Aboo Faatihah stated (that it's meaning is): the beginnings of the chapters of the Qur'aan. While Yahyaa bin Ya'mar stated (that it's meaning is): the religious obligations and the commands and prohibitions and the allowances and prohibitions. And Ibn Luhee'ah stated from 'Ataa' bin Deenaar from Sa'eed bin Jubayr that he stated regarding the statement of Allaah: } f اب eتf كg م ال y أl ن h l { ه "They are the foundations of the Book." Because they are recorded in all of the revealed books. And Muqaatil bin Hayyaan stated: Because one is not from the people of faith and belief except that he is accepts and agrees with them. And it is said regarding (( ات e هf اب e شeتl الم )) Al-Mutashaabihaat: (( ةe وخ µl سgنe الم )) Al-Mansookhah (i.e. the abrogated verses of the Qur'aan) and the earlier and later revealed verses, and that which it contains of parables and oaths, and those verses that should be believed in but not acted upon. And 'Aliyy bin Abee Talhah narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Abbaas that it is stated that ات )) e هf اب µe شe متl ال )) Al-Mutashaabihaat are the individual letters that are found in the beginning of some of the chapters of the Qur'aan. And Muqaatil bin Hayyaan stated from Mujaahid that: (( ات e هf اب µµe شeتl الم )) Al-Mutashaabihaat confirm and verify one another. And this can be found in the explanation of the verse: } e يf ان e مثh ا ] هf اب e شe متy ا ] اب eتf { ك "a book (this Qur'ân), its parts resembling each other, oft-repeated" There, they mention that (( هf اب e شeتl الم )) Al-Mutashaabih is that speech which refers to one context, one area of discourse. And (( يf ان µeثe الم )) Al-Mathaanee is that speech which is about two things that are connected, such as the description of Al-Jannah and the description of An-Naar, and the condition of the upright and righteous and the condition of the immoral and depraved, and that which is similar to this. But as for here specifically, then (( هf اب e شeتl الم )) Al-Mutashaabih is that which returns back to those verses that are clear and precise in their meaning. And the best of what has been stated in this regard is that which we presented previously. And it is as Muhammad bin Ishaaq bin Yasaar -rahimahullaah -defined it when he stated: ت } s اe مe كg حl ت م s اe آي l هgنf { م “In it are Verses that are entirely clear." And they are the proof and evidence of the Lord (i.e. Allaah); and the guarding and protection of the servants; and the repelling and refutation of those futile and false opponents and adversaries (of Islaam). And there is not any alteration, distortion or corruption of that which has been established and laid down by way of them. And he stated: And (( ات e هf اب µe شe متl ال )) Al-Mutashaabihaat, in truth, there is not any alteration, distortion, corruption or interpretation of them but rather Allaah tests the servants by way of them in the same manner that he tests them with that which he has made permissible and that which he has made impermissible in order that these verses are not directed towards falsehood nor are they corrupted and distorted from the truth. And because of this, Allaah -ta'aalaa -has stated: غ } s gيe ز g مf هf لوب ll ي ق f ف e ين f لذh ما ا h eأe { ف "So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth)" Meaning: Error, misguidance and the abandoning of truth for falsehood. ه } l gنf م e هe اب e شe ا ت e م e ون l عf تبheيe { ف "they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof" Meaning: That which they grab hold of and adhere to of the verses that are not entirely clear, those verses that they are able to alter and distort to conform to their evil and corrupt intentions and objectives, due to what the verses contain of ambiguity, thus rendering the possibility of their wording being in line with the altered and distorted meanings of those who are misguided. Whereas the verses that are entirely clear, then those who are misguided have no chance of altering and distorting them to conform to their evil and corrupt intentions and objectives but rather these verses are a refutation of and a proof against them.
