beautiful toneAnd its meaning according to the Sharee'ah is: (Al-Qurtubee) Do not rush in your recitation of the Qur'aan, rather recite it slowly and clearly alongside pondering and reflecting over its meanings. And Ad-Dahhaak stated: Recite it letter by letter. And Mujaahid stated: The most beloved of people to Allaah in regards recitation (of the Qur'aan) are the most well-versed and knowledgeable with regards to it. And (( الترتيل )) At-Tarteel, it is (( يد > ض9 تن@ ال )) At-Tandeed (composition) and (( يق > س9ن@ (( الت At-Tanseeq (setting something in order) and (( ام : نظU ن ال 9 س< ح )) Husnun-Nidhaam (the most excellent arrangement and organization). And Al-Hasan narrated that the Prophet -sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam -passed by a man who was reciting an Aayah and crying. So he -sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam -said, "Did you all not pay attention and take heed to the statement of Allaah -'azza wa jalla -} 8 يل >ت9 ر: ت : آن 9 ر<ق9 ال > تلU: ر: { و "and recite the Qur'aan (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style” This (i.e. the example of what you see from this man) is (what is meant by) (( (( الترتيل At-Tarteel. And Alqamah heard a man reciting with a beautiful recitation so he said: Verily he has recited the Qur'aan (as it should be recited), may my mother and father be his ransom. And Aboo Bakr bin Taahir stated: Ponder and reflect over the subtleties of its (the Qur'aan's) speech and demand from yourself the establishment of its rulings and from your heart the understanding of its meanings and from your innermost self attentiveness and concern for it. And it is narrated from Abdullaah bin 'Amroo who said: The Prophet -sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam -stated: "The reciter of the Qur'aan will be brought forward Yaumal-Qiyaamah and he will be stopped and made to stand at the foremost level of Al-Jannah. And it will be said to him: Ascend (the levels of Al-Jannah) and recite in a slow and melodious tone just as you used to recite slowly and melodiously in the world for verily your final abode is commensurate with the last verse you recite. (Ibn Katheer) Recite it slowly, for that will help in understanding the Qur'aan and contemplating over it. This is how the Prophet used to recite. `Aa'ishah said, "He (the Prophet) used to recite the chapter slowly, so much so that it would be longer than chapters that were actually longer than it." In Saheeh Al-Bukhaariyy, it is recorded from Anas that he was asked about the recitation of the Messenger of Allaah, so he replied, "He used to elongate the letters.'' Then he (Anas) recited,} > يم > رح@ ال > ـن : م9 رح@ ال > له@ ال > م9 س> { ب "In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy" (Al-Faatihah 1:1) And he elongated "(( > ه« ل@ ال > م«9 س>ب )) Bismillaah,'' and he elongated "(( > ن« ـ: م9 رح@ ال )) Ar-Rahmaan,'' and he elongated "(( > يم > رح@ ال )) Ar-Raheem." Ibn Jurayj reported from Ibn Abee Mulaykah, who narrated from Umm Salamah that she was asked about the recitation of the Messenger of Allaah , so she said, "He used to pause in his recitation, verse by verse. -> يم > رح@ ال > ـن : م9 رح@ -ال : ين > م: ـل : ع9 ب ال U : ر > له@ ل < د9 م: ح9 -ال > يم > رح@ ال > ـن : م9 رح@ ال > له@ ال > م9 س> { ب } > دين U ال > م9 و: ي > ك> ـل : م "In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. All praise is due to Allaah, the Lord of all that exists. The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. The Only Owner of the Day of Recompense." (Al-Faatihah 1:1-4) This was recorded by Ahmad, Aboo Daawood and At-Tirmidhiyy. And we have already mentioned the Ahaadeeth which prove the recommendation of slow rhythmic recitation and beautification of the voice while reciting at the beginning of this Tafseer. For example, the Hadeeth which states: « م< ك> ات : و9 ص:أ> ب : آن 9 ر<ق9 وا ال < ينU: ز » "Beautify the Qur'an with your voices” and the Hadeeth « آن 9 ر<ق9 ال > ن ب @ : غ:ت: ي 9 م: ل 9 ن: نا م @> م : س9ي:ل » "He is not of us who does not chant nicely with the recitation of the Qur'aan.” and the Hadeeth « د< او : د > آل > ير > ام : ز: م 9 ن> ا م 8 ار : م9 ز> ا م : ذ: ه : ي> أوت < 9 د:ق:ل » "Verily, he has been given this windpipe from the windpipes of the family of Daawud," referring to Aboo Moosaa. Aboo Moosaa replied, "If I knew that you had been listening to my recitation, I would have truly beautified it for you." It has been narrated from Ibn Mas`ood that he said, "Do not scatter the (recitation of) Qur'aan out like the scattering of sand, and do not rush through it like the hasty recitation of poetry. Stop at its amazing parts and make your heart move with it. None of you should let his concern be to reach the end of the chapter.'' This has been recorded by Al-Baghawiyy. Al-Bukhaariyy recorded from Abee Waa'il that he said, "A man came to Ibn Mas`ood and said, `I read (( صل@ :ف< م9 ال )) Al-Mufassal [i.e. those chapters which resemble one another (from Qaaf to An-Naas)] last night in one unit of prayer.' Ibn Mas`ood said, `This is rushing like the haste of reciting poetry. I learned (( صل@ :ف< م9 ال )) Al-Mufassal which the Prophet used to recite in pairs." Ibn Mas'ood then mentioned 20 from (( ل« ص@ :ف< م9 ال )) Al-Mufassal, including two chapters which begin with the letters (( أ )) ALIF, (( ل )) LAAM, (( (( ح HAA, and (( م )) MEEM (which the Prophet used to recite) in one unit of prayer.
