CONDITIONALS : CONDITIONALS Used when conditions are determined for something to happen. If I have time, I’ll go. CONDITION: having time
CONSEQUENCE/RESULT: going (somewhere)
Conditional S– type 2 : Conditional S– type 2 Use Conditional type 2 to talk about a hypothetical / imaginary situation in the present or future and its consequence.
I don’t have much money, so I can’t buy a bigger house. (Conditional type 1 – real situation)
If I had more money, I’d buy a bigger house. (Conditional type 2 – hypothetical / imaginary situation).
Conditional S– type 2 : Conditional S– type 2 STRUCTURE: If + past tense + would base verb
Use were for all subjects if the “if clause” contains the verb “be”. – If I were you…
The order of the clause is not fixed – the “if clause” can be first or second.
I’d be better at basketball if I were taller. – no comma
CONDITIONALS – TYPE 2 : CONDITIONALS – TYPE 2 A type 2 conditional can refer to the present or future.
Would you share the money with me if you won the lottery?
We normally use the past simple in the if clause and would in the main clause. The past tense expresses the fact that it is a hypothetical situation – it does not refer to the past.
I wouldn’t be so upset if you weren’t my best friend.
We occasionally use the past continuous instead of the past simple:
If they were playing better, they’d have more chance of winning.
CONDITIONALS – TYPE 2 : CONDITIONALS – TYPE 2 Examples:
If I had more money, I would buy a bigger house.
If he spoke English, he could get a job in a hotel.
I’d get along better with my parents if I didn’t live with them.
I wouldn’t do that job unless they paid me a really good salary.
If I were you, I’d buy a new computer.
CONDITIONALS – TYPE 3 : CONDITIONALS – TYPE 3 If + past perfect, would + have + past participle
Like type 2 conditionals, type 3 conditionals refer to hypothetical situations.
If you had revised, you wouldn’t have failed your exam.
Use Conditional type 3 to talk about a hypothetical / imaginary situation in the past (which didn’t happen) and its consequence.
Yesterday I got up late and missed my train. ( = the real situation)
If I hadn’t gotten up late yesterday, I wouldn’t have missed my train. ( = the hypothetical / imaginary situation)
CONDITIONALS – TYPE 3 : CONDITIONALS – TYPE 3 To make a Conditional type 3, use if + past perfect and would have + participle.
Would and had can both appear as the short form ‘d. Would is always in the main clause, had in the if clause.
