Personal Health History : Personal Health History
How I Got My Name : How I Got My Name I actually have two names. Usually people who have two names have one English name and one name in their own language, but for me, both of my names are Korean. One is Minhie, which I use as an English name, and another name is Da-young, which I used in Korea for about 12 years of my life. This uncommon consequence resulted when I was born in the U.S. My mom wanted to name me Minhie for so long that she named me Minhie and registered me in with the name Minhie. However, my grandfather who lives in Korea, named me Da-young and registered me as a Korean citizen—in Korea, if both of your parents are Koreans, you automatically get Korean citizenship. So I have got two Korean names. Many people think Minhie is my Korean name, but my actual Korean name is Da-young.
Meaning/Origin of My Name : Meaning/Origin of My Name In Korea, most names are made out of Chinese character since ancient Korea used to borrow words from China. So does my names. My Korean name, is made out of two chinese characters pronounced in Korean, Da (多: many) and Young (領: to lead) which means to lead many people. My another name, Minhie, did not have any meaning at first, but recently, my mom and I made a meaning for it. Since my mom and I are very firm Christian, I got the meaning from one Bible verse: Min (民: nation) and Hie (熙: to shine) which means I am a nation of light.
Date and Place of Birth : Date and Place of Birth I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on January 25th, 1992. It was very cold winter and winter in Michigan was even worse. However, my mom loved Michigan and so did I. I was born in University of Michigan hospital. My father was studying in University of Michigan so my family lived in the student apartments where U of M provided some students in grad school. When I was about 2 years old, my family—my parents and my older sister, Min-kyoung—came back to Korea.

- I am pretty healthy compare to other people who are about my age
Do you have any illness?
- I have Perkins disease but it’s not that serious

- I visited hospital 2 weeks ago
Interview With My Grandfather 2 : Interview With My Grandfather 2 Why did you go to hospital?

Do you exercise a lot?
- I walk a lot but I don’t do any other extended exercise
Do you have any unhealthy habits?
- I smoke
What does your family say to you about that?
- They force me to quit, but since I am very stubborn, they gave up
Interview With My Grandfather 3 : Interview With My Grandfather 3 Did it affect your health?
- Not really. I mean, people are telling me to quit because it’s not good for my health, but so far I don’t find any problem with it
Did you use to get health check up or anything like that at school when you were little?
- Yes, we certainly did. We had many check ups since we did not have great deal of money to get family doctor or anything at the time
Can you tell me one of them?
- The worst check up was feces examinations. I don’t know how to call it in English, but it was once a semester and it was awful cause they force me to go to bathroom
Why would they check up your feces?
- Well I guess you can tell the person’s nutrition state by looking at feces. But the major reason was to see if we have mawworms or not.
What is mawworm?
- Maw worm is a worm that lives in your intestines and eats all your nutrition that you consume, so basically, you can’t get any nutrition and it can be very bad.

- If you have one, they will give you a medicine, and you eat it and go to bathroom. And the worm would come out with your feces.

- Yea. At the time, the sanitary system wasn’t as good as it is these days and a lot of kids had mawworms or had nutrition issues.
However, I feel like young people these days are even weaker than the ones from your time. Do you agree with me?
- Yes I certainly do. I feel like many kids these days are not strong enough or engaged enough to certain activities.
Can you give me examples for me?
- Like when I was young, many people had farms and things that we always had to work physically and also we were not as obsessed about education as they are now. Which gave us more time to run around and exercise.
So what you are basically saying is their lifestyle is not healthy?
- No I don’t think it’s healthy at all. And I don’t like it very much. Kids sitting in a room and studying all day long? Look, how depressing is that?

Is there any physical challenges that you are going through?
- Yes. I am getting old. Haha
Can you share with me those challenges more specifically?
- Well, it’s hard to do things faster and to remember things better. I have problems to see and listen to things too.
Does that make you sad?
- No, not really. At first it did, but now that I think of it, I had spent such a wonderful times in my life and now I am alive and well and I thank God for it already.

A Song That Represents Me : A Song That Represents Me The song is called La Valse D’Amélie by an artist Yenn Tiersen and it is one of the sound tracks on the movie called Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain. It is a French movie and song.
I chose this song because I loved the movie and could relate myself to the main character Amélie a lot. She is a kind of person that I want to be like and this song is just as sweet and lovely as I tried to be and her. It is unique and original but also has exotic feelings. It gives certain foreign feelings that I have as Korean American.
Self-Portrait : Self-Portrait
Self-Portrait Description : Self-Portrait Description I would say this is my self-portrait. It is one of the pages from my diary from last year. Future Aspirations : Future Aspirations
A Person That Had Influence On Me : A Person That Had Influence On Me I would say my mom, but it is too obvious and not original. So I chose a person who had influence on me the second most after my mom, Eun-Jin Cho. She is only one year older than me but she has taught me so many things that I will never learn both spiritually and mentally and she catches things that others doesn’t even pay attention to. She is very positive and bright person that you want to be around anytime and she is full with love that nobody can resist her. She was there for me when I was having such a hard time and always encouraged me, but when it’s needed, she never ceased to give me advises that others can’t even tell me about. I learned so much from her and she is the one that I looked up to and wanted to be like.
Letter to Eun-Jin Unnie! : Letter to Eun-Jin Unnie! Hey Eun-Jin Unnie~ You don’t even know how important you are to me in my life. You always filled me up with love and care when I really needed it. Even when I was separated from my family and felt like no one can understand me or love me, you were the only one who always reminded me how much people love me. Even in the time of hardships and struggles, you were just there no matter how many things or words you can provide for me but never let go of my hand. You are so loving and caring that your existence brightens up the whole world. Like I always say, you are the one that I truly look up to, and I love like my real family. You are truly a gift from heaven for me! I love you! Minhie <3

One Thing That I Want To Accomplish : One Thing That I Want To Accomplish There’s this one thing that I always have dreamed about. I always wanted to go to Europe, especially to Paris to study fine art. I love impressionism paintings, and Paris was the main place where the impressionism movement had occurred. Not only that, Paris is so called, city of art and still has many artists and philosophers. I really like their lifestyle and the culture that I really want to go there and live and study for couple of years
Media Awareness : Media Awareness
My Opinion Towards The Media : My Opinion Towards The Media I really respect the influences of the media and like to associate with them, but sometimes, I feel like I am being fooled by the media and people behind it. Through media, they put up false ideal images to the teenagers that causes the serious social problems. It can be enjoyed once or twice, but when it becomes constant, people start to get obsessed with it. Even myself, from time to time, feels bad about myself because I am not dressing in a way so-called, “hot” or “in”. I always feel like I should have a bone-skinny body like some models in the magazines do. But as I grow older, I learned how to not tossed back and forth by whatever people talk about, but stay with my own value and belief.
I Love My Body As It Is : I Love My Body As It Is
Explanation To My Slogan : Explanation To My Slogan Once I went to the exhibition of this one photographer. He was Korean, and he took bunch of women with sheer clothing or underwear on, and they did not have bodies what we call “pretty” or “skinny”, but they seemed very satisfied with perfect, bright smile on their face. Even though they were not “fitting in”, they were confident about their body. On the corners of the pictures, every picture had this slogan and the name of the model. The slogan can sound too direct or boring, but as I see this slogan again and again, the stronger the message came to me. So I really liked the slogan as it is. It is direct and obvious.
