Welcome Back My Dedicated Students!!! : Welcome Back My Dedicated Students!!! Please have this week’s homework packet. You have until 7:00 to IM each other then we must start. No IM chatting during presentation please. This is a recorded session so please be very mindful of what you say and how you say it. If we did not give you enough time to get the answers you needed from a slide, we can and will come back to it at the end of the presentation. Please ask many questions and respond to each other’s questions if you know the answer! Welcome and I am very glad you are here!!!

What we hope to cover today.. : What we hope to cover today.. We need to define what an ecosystem is. Define a-biotic and biotic parts of an ecosystem. Show how a-biotic and biotic factors rely upon each other. Show how changes in one factor could lead to drastic changes of all the other factors in an ecosystem. Present food chains and food webs of ecosystems and show how they exist in a delicate balance. Define the differences between consumers, producers and decomposers, plus show how they rely upon each other for survival.

What is an ecosystem?The next three slides will help you with Monday # 1 : What is an ecosystem?The next three slides will help you with Monday # 1 Ecosystem: “An ecosystem is a collection of all plants, animals, micro-organism, bacterium and fungus as well as the non-living components that function together as one unit in a given area.” http://www.ehow.com/facts_5479626_definition-ecosystem.html More simply put, an ecosystem is ALL living and nonliving things in a specific area.

Ecosystems are: Sustainable if all things are existing in balance with each other and can reproduce without some of the species becoming extinct or endangered. Unique to the climate, the amount of water, and the terrain of an area. The more diversity of the factors that exist in an ecosystem, the more healthy the ecosystem is. We all live in an ecosystem.

A-biotic Versus Biotic : A-biotic Versus Biotic A—biotic factors are all of the nonliving things found in a particular ecosystem. Biotic are all of the living things in an ecosystem. Each of these rely upon the other. Weather is an example of a non living a-biotic factor. Flowers are examples of biotic things in an ecosystem.

How Does A-biotic and Biotic Affect Each Other?Monday # 2 : How Does A-biotic and Biotic Affect Each Other?Monday # 2 The types of animals and plants in an ecosystem that die there help form the soil type when they decay. Plants will help create moisture that feeds rain clouds and also keeps the areas under it cooler with their shade. Beavers will create small lakes by blocking up rivers and streams, thus, they create new habitats for other animals and plants. A-biotic factors like the amount of water and soil will determine the types of plants that can grow there, which determine what types of other creature will be able to live there too. Things like soil and water types, how many buildings and streets exist, and pollution are all a-biotic factors that determine the types of plants, animals, and other living things that can exist there. Glaciers are a-biotic and can create new streams for biotic organisms like fish to exist in.

All living things rely upon non living and other living things found in an ecosystem to survive. Think of a rabbit: It uses the soil to burrow holes in to create shelter. Eats plants found in a field or forest for energy found in food. Drinks water from streams, ponds, and other bodies of water.

What if we change a part of an ecosystem? It creates devastating effects!!! Here’s three: Recent global warming has created a loss of habitat for polar bears causing their population to drop significantly. The ash cloud over Europe and Iceland will kill plants because of a lack of sunlight, which will in turn kill the animals that eat those plants. Acid rain water made lakes in New York so acidic that no life other than blue-green algae are able to live in them.

Food Webs!!!Wednesday # 1 : Food Webs!!!Wednesday # 1 Food webs display how all living things in an ecosystem rely upon each other for energy from food. They tell us: What plants or animals are eaten by other species. How diverse and healthy an ecosystem is at sustaining life. The number of sources one species may have for food in an ecosystem. Some of the plants, animals and other species exist in a ecosystem.

What happens if we take out the rabbit from this ecosystem? The grass population will increase because nothing is eating it. The fox population will have to adapt and find a new source of food or it will decrease and die out.

Animals or plants eaten by the species will increase population because nothing is eating them. Animals that rely upon that species for food will have to find new food sources or die out. The old balance of the ecosystem is changed forever and must adapt or die out completely.

Producers, Consumers, DecomposersThursday # 1 : Producers, Consumers, DecomposersThursday # 1 Producers create their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide and nutrients from the soil. Consumers use other living plants and animals as their food source for energy. Decomposers break down organic materials like dead plants and animals as their food source for energy. All plants are producers and create their own food. Their energy comes from absorbing sunlight. All animals that eat plants, other animals, or both are consumers. They do not make their own sources of energy but rely upon other energy sources. Bacteria and other micro organisms feed off of dead organisms and decompose them.

Rabbits eat the grass and get energy from digesting them. Fox eat the rabbits and get the energy stored in them from digestion. Fox will eventually die and are decomposed by bacteria. Any energy stored in the fox’s body will be used by the bacteria. Bacteria will then return new nutrients to the soil to be used by new plants.

Every Time A Species Gets Energy, Energy Is Lost… : Every Time A Species Gets Energy, Energy Is Lost… Every time energy from the sun goes from one species to another in a food chain some energy is lost. Only plants use and store all the energy received by the sun. That energy gets used by things that eat the plants. Some of that energy is lost in the process of digesting the plant. Consumers that eat plant eaters that eat plants, get the least amount of energy from their food. This is because energy is lost in digesting the plant eater, and because the plant eater has already used some of the energy it received from the plant to grow and live therefore it has less to give the predator that eats it. To understand this better, wait and come back next week!!!
