Key MATHS 7¹ Home Work Sheet 2:3 (Turnings)
Part1.Starter Activity(15 mins) : Part1.Starter Activity (15 mins) After specifying the learning outcomes of this lesson,
Either:-
Display on the OHP, picture/diagrams of the following pairs and ask for the class to identify significant similarity between each pair ?
Clock hands vs screwdriver
windmill vs worm
a wheel vs a doorknob …
The answer to all should be ‘turns’ (5mins)
Part1.Starter Activity(contd)(15 mins) : Or
Distribute the whiteboards and have the students make a list of, or sketches of all the things they know that turn. (5mins)
( reward the most correct with merit stamps etc.)
What in the class view is the description of a turn?
Emphasise turn as movement about a centre. Part1.Starter Activity(contd) (15 mins)
Starter Activity(contd) : Starter Activity(contd) Do ‘Simon says’ game using keywords as Simon’s instructions e.g
‘Simon says to do a ¼ turn to your right’
‘Simon says ½ turn anti-clockwise….
After 10 mins end game with the promise to re-run it at the end of lesson.
Part 2. Main Activity(30 mins) : Part 2. Main Activity (30 mins) Question: What is clockwise movement?
Answer: direction of movement of the hands of the clock. (describe using clock face)
Question: What is anti-clockwise movement?
Answer: opposite to clockwise movement.
Describe the turn fractions using clock.
Set exercise to reinforce understanding.e.g On clock face handout, draw the position of the hand after it has turned through ½ turn clockwise.
Main Activity(contd)(30 mins) : Main Activity(contd) (30 mins) Extension:
Set exercises to determine what fraction of turn is required to turn from e.g North to east in both directions (clockwise and anticlockwise)
Have students substitute angle values for directional points i.e N,S,NE etc. if North is 0 degrees. Repeat previous exercise.
Part 3. Plenary(10mins) : Part 3. Plenary (10mins) Recap to confirm learning outcomes achieved.
Do round of ‘Simon says’ to confirm the above.
Hand out home work sheets.
