Competitive sports are a very important aspect of our lives. We can see sports on TV, the internet and in person if we choose. Many people argue that competitive sports are so important for our young people that it should be a mandatory aspect of our school curriculum. I believe that this is true: competitive sports are one of the most important parts of our school curriculum. Competitive sports can have a positive effect on the physical development of young people. Firstly, obesity is fast becoming one of the most serious issues for children in today’s developed world, and much of this is attributed to today’s youth sitting in front of the television or the internet instead of engaging in a sport. Secondly, even though a child is not obese, he or she still needs to develop muscles, tendons and bones to ensure a healthy adulthood. Finally, sports will certainly help our young people appreciate exercise and those lessons could last for a life time, which could keep them happy and healthy adults. Students can also develop their social skills through sports. Firstly, many businesses in today’s world claim that they want employees with a strong sense of team work. What better place to develop team work than on a sports team? Many competitive sports like football, cricket and hockey require a serious commitment to team work; coaches often preach the need for everyone to work together because victory depends on it. Another important social skill is the ability to work hard to achieve goals. Through sports, young people get the chance to set goals and pursue them through hard work, a lesson that has direct implications for a person’s future success. Playing competitive sports is an important factor in a good education as it helps young people develop into healthy, socially developed adults. The world needs more active, hardworking people who can be part of a team. Some people believe that competitive sports are necessary part of a school’s curriculum. Do you agree or disagree?
