WHAT IS EDUCATION? : WHAT IS EDUCATION? Latin: Educare : To bring up Educere: To lead out or to draw out Narrower Meaning Broader Meaning Analytical Meaning Not limited to knowledge imparted in schools Develops child’s innate powers Dynamic process Bipolar process and Tripolar process

RELATIONSHIP : RELATIONSHIP Two sides of the same coin i.e. life. Education is the dynamic side of philosophy - Sir John Adams. Education is the active aspect of philosophical belief, the practical means of realizing ideals of life - Ross. The art of education will never attain complete clearness without philosophy - Fichte. Philosophy is the theory of education in its most general phase. Education is a laboratory in which philosophical directions become concrete and are tested - Dewey. Philosophy points out the way and education follows it. Education is called as the modification of behaviour and the direction in which modification is to be carried out is determined by philosophy.

PHILOSOPHY AND EDUCATIONAL AIMS : PHILOSOPHY AND EDUCATIONAL AIMS No system of education can be properly appraised and appreciated, unless it is studied in connection with the ideas and ideals which it represents- Acharya J.B. Kriplani. The Soviet system of education could be properly understood only in the light of the philosophy of Marxism and Leninism. During the British period, the rulers were guided by their philosophy of imperialism and accordingly formulated the system of education in India. The aims of education in independent India have been determined by the philosophy underlying our Constitution. The aim of education has a reference to the ideals or philosophy of a nation.

PHILOSOPHY AND CURRICULUM : PHILOSOPHY AND CURRICULUM The philosophical approach to life is the guiding factor in the determination of the curriculum. Gandhiji’s Scheme of basic education: -against lopsidedness of educational system. -self-supporting besides developing moral character. Humanism, idealism, pragmatism and naturalism have influenced curriculum in varying degrees. Ancient Sparta- Training and development as a soldier. Democratic Society- Development of individuality. Ancient India - simple living and high thinking. - attaining salvation by leading pure and simple life. - sages and seers converted homes into educational institutions.

PHILOSOPHY AND TEXTBOOKS : PHILOSOPHY AND TEXTBOOKS Content of the textbooks Must mirror the philosophy or way of life of the people. In a State dominated by -Socialist society textbooks emphasize socialist philosophy. -Religious leaders, textbooks reflect tenets of scriptures. In India- great stress on emotional integration and national unity. Textbooks are screened time and again.

PHILOSOPHY AND METHODS OF TEACHING : PHILOSOPHY AND METHODS OF TEACHING Every school of philosophy has its own methods of teaching. Idealism- Question-answer, Lecture and Discussion methods Naturalism- Learning by doing, learning by experience and direct experience. Pragmatism- Project method, Problem solving and Socialist techniques. Modern philosophic views hold that the teacher should prepare the environment as best as he can and then leave children alone.

PHILOSOPHY AND DISCIPLINE : PHILOSOPHY AND DISCIPLINE Philosophy of an age is reflected in the discipline of its educational institutions. discipline even reflects the political philosophy prevalent in the country. -In despotic system of country=Repression. -In democracy=inner as well as social discipline. -Idealists=impression of the teacher on students -Naturalists=free discipline.

PHILOSOPHY AND THE TEACHER : PHILOSOPHY AND THE TEACHER The teacher has an important role of Shaping and moulding : -the ideals habits, manners, tastes and ways of life of the students -Character and personality of the students The teacher must have a consistent and sound Philosophy in accordance with the philosophy of his/her nation.
