In 1972 the Tuskegee Study was brought to public and national attention by a whistleblower, who gave information to the Washington Star and the New York Times. Heller of PHS still defended the ethics of the study, stating: "The men's status did not warrant ethical debate. They were subjects, not patients; clinical material, not sick people."From: Research Ethics: The Tuskegee Syphilis Studyhttp://www.scribd.com/doc/20983187/IVMS-The-Tuskegee-Syphilis-ExperimentCompiled, Designed and Presented byMarc Imhotep Cray, M.D.IVMS -The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment Companion iPaperVIDEO EDUCATION VERSION:Vanessa Northington Gamble, M.D., Ph.D., is Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University Tuskegee Syphilis Study Series: "LeNoir/NMA Memorial Lecture"IVMS© 20092Syphilis -Topic OverviewWhat is syphilis?Syphilisis a sexually transmitted disease (STD). If it’s not treated by a doctor, it can get worse over time and cause serious health problems.4 Stages of SyphilisSyphilis is often called "the great imitator" because it has varying symptoms and these symptoms usually resemble those of many other diseasesThe bacteria usually follows a four stage pattern that at times can overlapTheTreponema pallidumbacteriumIVMS© 20093Syphilis is a sexually transmittedinfection (STI)caused by the bacteriumTreponema pallidumIt can also be passed from mother to baby during pregnancy or birth causing a disease called congenital syphilishttp://www.nzma.org.nz/journal/120-1250/2448/http://www.wales.nhs.uk/sites3/page.cfm?orgid=719&pid=23160IVMS© 20094Primary stage:One of the first signs is a painless open sore called a chancre (say "SHANK-er"). Because syphilis is usually spread when people have sexual contact, chancres are often found in the mouth, the anus, or the genital area. They may also be found wherever the bacteria entered the body.http://www.webmd.com/sexual-conditions/tc/syphilis-topic-overviewSource of images:http://www.bio.davidson.edu/people/sosarafova/Assets/Bio307/stdouglass/Page%2002.htmIVMS© 20095Secondary stage:A skin rash and other symptoms may show up 4 to 10 weeks after a person is infected. At this stage, it is very easy to spread the disease through contact with the mouth, the anus, the genitals, or any area where there is a skin rash.Source of images:http://www.bio.davidson.edu/people/sosarafova/Assets/Bio307/stdouglass/Page%2002.htmIVMS© 20096Latent stage:After the rash clears, a person may have a period with no symptoms. This is often called the "hidden stage." Even though symptoms go away, the bacteria that cause syphilis are still in the body and begin to damage the internal organs. This stage may be as short as 1 year or last from 5 to 20 years.Often, a woman with latent-stage syphilis doesn't find out that she has the disease until she gives birth to a child with syphilis.IVMS -The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment Companion iPaperIVMS© 20097Late (tertiary) stage:If syphilis is not found and treated in the early stages, it can cause other serious health problems. These can include blindness, problems with the nervous systemand the heart, and mental disorders. It can also cause death.Source of image:http://www.bio.davidson.edu/people/sosarafova/Assets/Bio307/stdouglass/Page%2002.htmSource of images:http://marshall.csu.edu.au/CNMI/CNMIBIB/Photos/Leber_Syphilis.html IVMS© 20098The Tuskegee syphilis experiment(also known as the Tuskegee syphilis studyor Public Health Service syphilis study) was a clinical study conducted between 1932 and 1972 in Tuskegee, Alabama, by the U.S. Public Health Service. Investigators recruited 399 impoverished African-American sharecroppers with syphilis for research related to the natural progression of the untreated disease, in hopes of justifying treatment programs for blacks.IVMS© 20099Vanessa Northington Gamble, M.D., Ph.D., is Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University, and is an internationally recognized expert on ... all » the history of race and racism in American medicine, cultural competence, and diversity.
