VERBAL NEGATION : VERBAL NEGATION Functions of Negation:
1. Negative sentences are used to make assertions
I won’t be able to teach my students tomorrow.
2. It is used to express refusal.
A: Would you like another cup of coffee?
B: No, thank you.
Slide 4 : Negation can be divided into primary verb negation and secondary verb negation.
Primary verb negation refers to the use of NOT to negate a clause that contains a present or past tense verb.
Slide 5 : My cousins are staying with me.
I read a book. My cousins are not staying with me . aren’t
I did not read a book . didn’t
Primary verb negations are of the following kinds. : Primary verb negations are of the following kinds. She is singing.
The child has been playing.
He can do it later. She is not singing. ( She isn’t singing .)
The child has not been playing . ( The child hasn’t been playing.)
He can not do it later. ( He can’t do it later. )
: He is a teacher.
There is a name in my hand.
They were in class. He is not a teacher . ( He isn’t a teacher)
There is not a name in my hand . ( There isn’t a name in my hand. )
They were not in class .(They weren’t in class.)
