CLASS 5 Table of Contents  Review Homework 1  How the strategies worked for me. 1  Reading Section – Sentence Completions. 2  “Vocabulary” is a big word 2  Let’s Do Some Review 6 Review Homework How the strategies worked for me. Spend the next hour reviewing your homework. Take notes on the spreadsheet to track progress. Don’t fear errors; embrace them with the fervor of a hero that vows not to ever (intentionally) make the errors again again again again… QUICK QUOTE TO PONDER: “It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.” – Albert Einstein **Keep your eyes open for the “Hidden Agendas” Reading Section – Sentence Completions. “Vocabulary” is a big word The sentence completion portion of the test is often referred to as the “vocabulary” portion of the test. To be honest, the man who knows the definition of every word in the dictionary can more easily answer the sentence completion questions, HOWEVER, the man who knows how to figure out the correct answer even when he does Not know the definition of all words has the same advantage. Before delving into the strategy of this section it is important to keep in mind that this portion of the test Will Not dramatically affect your score, so make sure to stay positive even in the face of a seemingly supercilious vocabulary section. THE MAIN STRATEGY Pay attention to “hints” in the sentences. **The sentences will provide clues to let you know whether you are looking for synonyms or antonyms. Try to hear words that you DO know inside of words that you don’t know. Ex. “Transient”.. What do you hear? ‘Trans’portation? .. Something about movement or Don’t pick words that change the meaning of a sentence. Don’t be disheartened if you aren’t sure what the answer is! This is a tough section for many people, but you can still get an excellent score despite imperfections here! If You Don’t Know the Word, Look It Up… …And add the word to a list of words that you will try to use in your writing practice. **Remember that on the essay it’s better to use correct words than to use big words. So don’t get overzealous and ruin your essay by capitulating it with incorrect word usages ( “capitulating” is the wrong word here. Capitulate can be used to mean “to submit”, but it means “submit” in the sense of “surrender”, Not in the sense of “to submit a paper”.) Google and online dictionaries make this too easy. [In an old person’s voice]: “When I was a youngster, we had to look up the words in a Dictionary.. And my dictionary had 10,000 pages!” It is true though. It’s soooo easy now; type those big words into Google to get definitions. If you don’t remember what the word means the next day, then google it again. Words eventually stick. They stick faster for some people but they do eventually stick for everyone. How do you think you’re able to read this? And, “dictionary” is a pretty dang big word ( E.G.A.D like crazy here! After eliminating at least 1 answer you can guess which of the remaining answers is correct. Let your ear help you. Some words sound like they mean something “bad” while other words sound like they mean something “good”. Don’t be afraid to use your intuition in this situation.
