Week 4 Topics: Copyright Law, Fair Use Standards, Creative Commons I'll be the first to admit that my knowledge of current Copyright Laws, Intellectual Property Law and Fair Use Principles is somewhat sketchy.  I think that is true for most educators.  For example, many of us have heard of Creative Commons licensing and yet our knowledge may be less than complete.  We all should have current knowledge of these things; they are truly important.   Please read the following resources which help to put this material together very nicely.   With your Tool Team, test your prior knowledge on this Voicethread Copyright Quiz http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html, http://btcelearning.ning.com/video/copyright-101-for-teachers http://creativecommons.org With your team, take the quiz again.  Tell me how well you did!      A3b:  Summarize your findings relative to your professional use of material and submit as a Google Doc.  Place a link to your Google Doc on the "Copyright Etc." wiki page.  Use the report rubric in the syllabus as a guide.  Due next week.  Privacy, Ethics, Security   A2a:  Ethics and Privacy:  Please read the resources listed below and comment briefly by next week on the "Ethics and Privacy Page" in our wiki.  How do you feel about whether your personal information is secure?  Do you have fears that your identity may be stolen as a result of your online activity?  Have you become more cautious when using the Internet?  Do you shop online and, if so, do you worry about it?  Due next week. Electronic Privacy Information Center (http://www.epic.org/ ) Ethics Web (http://www.ethicsweb.ca/resources/) This is a huge clearing house site for Computer and Information Ethics information Safe Internet Use for Children Clearly children's Internet Safety is an essential concern.  We've all heard news stories about kids making bad decisions regarding online activity and becoming victims.  Just steering children to appropriate sources to use for class projects can be a challenge.  We need to be able to guide children's internet use so that children remain safe.  Fortunately there is a lot of good information available.  Please read the following resources:   Children’s Internet Protection Act: http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/cipa.html . Internet Safety for Kids:  http://www.komputers4rkids.com/Protection.html is a huge clearinghouse of resources for teachers and parents related to keeping children safe on the Internet. Government Publications:  http://www.fbi.gov/publications/pguide/pguidee.htm The Wise Kids website:  http://www.webwisekids.org/index.asp?page=parents   A3c:  This is a team activity.  Working in teams, you are to prepare a slide presentation about this topic and create a link to it on the wiki page called "Children's Internet Safety".  Presentation criteria are found in the presentation rubric. Due next week.    Sample: http://docs.google.com/a/wolfmail.stritch.edu/present/view?id=dhq4jxv2_36gv4km5fx&AuthEventSource=SSO A2a:  Optional Activity.   Second Life, developed by Linden Labs is a virtual world populated by Avatars and offering a graphically rich environment supporting many kinds of human activity.  It has many potential educational applications but can also be used for social networking.   There is much controversy about whether it should  be blocked by schools.  Check out at least two of the Second Life sites listed below used for teaching and learning and offer your brief reaction on the "Second Life Page" in our wiki.  You will have to create a free Second Life account and download the Second Life software (which can always be removed later if you wish.)  If you can find Second Life examples from your area you can use those instead.  Have fun.  If you want to look for me in Second Life, my avatar's name is Blaster Bailey!       Second Life Planetarium at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Spaceport%20Alpha/21/29/23/ Second Life Library at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Info%20Island/105/58/34/ International Schools Island at http://slurl.com/secondlife/International%20Schools/64/90/24/ Spaceflight Museum at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Spaceport%20Alpha/23/51/22/ ISTE Aquarium at http://slurl.com/secondlife/ISTE%20Island/138/161/749/ Museum of Music at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Infotainment%20Island/3/217/31/ Virtual Starry Night: Vincent's Second Life at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Luctesa/103/127/26/
