Slide 6 : Catholic
Slide 7 : Catholic In obedience to Sacred Scripture, many Catholic women wear some kind of veil or headcovering. Some wear a headcovering only at Mass. Others feel called to wear a headcovering at other times during the day, as well as at Mass.
The veil should cover her head, but not her face. It is first and foremost symbolic of humility, submissiveness and obedience.
Slide 8 : Catholic When Saint Veronica saw Jesus carrying His cross, she took off her veil and gave it to Him to wipe His face. He handed the veil back to her, and it had an image of His face on it. In this way, Christ gave a special blessing to the practice of wearing a veil. Even Veronica's name comes from this event. She is called vera icon because she had a true icon of Christ, her veil with His face on it. Nearly every Catholic Church has the stations of the Cross with this event at one of the stations.
Slide 9 : Catholic The Virgin Mary wore a veil or headcovering because she understood this symbol of the different roles given to men and women.
Those women who wear the veil are imitating the Virgin Mary in her humility and submissiveness. Nearly every Catholic Church has a stature or image of Mary wearing a veil.
Slide 10 : Amish Kapp
Slide 11 : Purpose of the Kapp
Amish kapps, though worn all the time, are technically 'prayer veils'. Their use stems from the Biblical passage 1 Corinthians 11: 3-16, which can be interpreted as mandating head coverings for women. This passage applies to women's headwear during worship only; however, the Amish cite the Biblical injunction to 'pray without ceasing' as a reason to stay veiled permanently.
Slide 12 : Purpose of the Kapp continued…..
Additionally, Romans 12:2 commands Christians not to conform to the world. This verse is the basis for many Amish traditions which involve conspicuously 'different' customs or attire, and one of the reasons Amish kapps are worn outside church meetings. The veils are a visible symbol of separateness and submission. No Amish woman wearing a kapp could be mistaken for an Englischer (non-Amish), and this is how the Amish like it.

Slide 15 : Allah has stated in the Quran that women must guard their modesty. " Say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty ; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof. " [Quran : 24.31]" Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty ; that will make for greater purity for them, and God is well acquainted with all they do. " [Quran : 24.30]
Slide 16 : WikipediaThe four major Sunni schools of thought (Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali) hold that entire body of the woman, except her face and hands- though many say face, hands, and feet-, is part of her awrah, that is the parts of her body that must be covered during prayer and in public settings.
Slide 17 : “But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given her for a covering.”
Slide 18 : 1 Corinthians 11
1Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
2Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
3But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
4Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
5But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
Slide 19 : 1 Corinthians 11
6For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
7For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
8For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
9Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
10For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
Slide 20 : 1 Corinthians 11
11Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
12For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
13Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
14Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
15But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
16But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
Slide 21 : Paul’s teaching about hair – Cut, or Uncut
Symbolism of the teaching
Hair symbolizes the relationship of husband and wife.
How does this represent the Lord’s relationship with the church?
A woman’s long hair symbolizes that she submits to God’s plan and to the family leadership of her husband.
A man’s short hair symbolizes that he submits to God’s plan, and accepts the family leadership position.
Slide 22 : “Doth not even nature itself teach you,…”
1 Cor 11:14
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
Nature teaches there should be a visible distinction between male and female.
In almost all cultures, men have worn short hair in comparison to women.
Slide 23 : “Doth not even nature itself teach you,…”
Men are ten times as likely to grow bald than women.
It is natural for a man not to have any hair, but unnatural for a woman not to have hair.
Hair length makes a distinction between the sexes, which God considers to be important. (Gen 1:27, Deut 22:5)
Slide 24 : “But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given her for a covering.”(verse 15)
Long hair on women give glory and provides covering.
Questions
When is a woman’s hair long? 10 inches, 36 inches?
(genetically some African women’s hair only grows about an inch. Are they disqualified from being able to have glory, or the covering it provides?
Slide 25 : “Freedom of choice!.”
God always gives us a freedom to choose.
We did not choose to be male or female.
By our choice of dress and lifestyle, we show acceptance or rejection of God’s plan for us as male and female, husband or wife, father or mother.
Slide 26 : We have no other such custom.(verse 16)
Paul states in verse 16 that all the churches had this same teaching. He said there was no other custom observed.
At the time there were Jewish, Greek, Roman and Asian cultures in the church yet they all had the same practice.
As you might recall, Paul was very adamant about pushing Jewish customs and Mosaic law upon the new gentile believers.
Slide 27 : “Hair as the hair of women”.(Revelation 9:8)
Revelation 9:8 (KJV)
And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
There is no biological difference between men and women’s hair.
The difference is the length it is allowed to grow.
Slide 28 : “Hair as the hair of women”.(Revelation 9:8)
Revelation 9:8 (KJV)
And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
John’s writings came forty years after Paul's. He knew all the readers would understand his description.
