Slide 1 : COOPERATIVE LEARNING Dr. Savita Manchekar working together to attain group goals

Slide 2 : Definitions: Cooperative learning is students working together to "attain group goals that cannot be obtained by working alone or competitively" (Johnson, Johnson, & Holubec, 1986). Cooperative learning is a teaching strategy designed to promote productive and mutual learning among a group of students.

Slide 3 : Cooperative learning is a specific kind of group learning in which students work together in small groups on a structured activity. Cooperative learning is a strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject.

Slide 4 : Objectives To actively participate in the learning process. To reconstruct and expand knowledge into new learning experiences. To learn through dialoug in a social setting. To develop self learning habit. To work together in small groups with individuals of varied talents,abilities & backgrounds to accomplish a common goal. To develop social skill essential for a interpersonal communication.

Slide 5 : Fundamental principles Learning in the social setting is a real life learning. Students think critically when they formulate their own solutions cooperatively with differing viewpoints. Based on Piaget, and Kohlberg’s and John Dewey's philosophy.

Slide 6 : Collaborative Learning involve larger group knowledge is developmental in nature Cooperative Learning John Dewey's philosophy of the social nature of learning specific kind of collaborative learning group assessed as a whole, individually accountable for their work. Knowledge is constructed.

Slide 7 : Characteristics of Cooperative learning: Cooperative Learning is Structured Each Group strives to achieve the common goal. Cooperative Learning Creates a Classroom Community There is positive Interdependence as well as Individual Accountability. Cooperative Learning Responds to Classroom Diversity Every member is mentally and physically active throughout the process.

Slide 14 : Advantages of Cooperative learning Promotes student learning and academic achievement. Increases students’ retention of knowledge.

Promotes a social interaction which helps in better social relationship. Students learn to work with all types of people. helps in better adjustment with the situation.
