Slide 2 : Overview In this class we are going to show you how to make thing and suggest magical and empowered uses.

Slide 3 : Tussie-Mussie A nosegay, posey (or posie, posy), flower bouquet or tussie-mussie is a small bunch of flowers, typically given as a gift. They have existed in some form since at least medieval times, when they were carried or worn around the head or bodice to mask the unpleasant smells of the time - literally, to keep the nose gay (to keep the nose happy). In their current form, they rose to popularity during the reign of Queen Victoria, from 1837 onwards, at which time the tussie-mussie became a popular fashion accessory. Typically, tussie-mussies include floral symbolism from the Language of Flowers, and therefore may be used to send a message to the recipient.

Slide 6 : How to Make a Tussie Mussie Materials Needed: 1) Rose or other prominent flower for the center. 2) Filler flowers such as; pansies, lavender, spikes and baby's breath. 3) A variety of herbs and leaves such as; rosemary, mint, basil. 4) Large leaves for framing the outside of your bouquet such as; lamb's ears, scented rose geranium leaves or violet leaves. 5) Wax floral tape 6) Scissors 7) Paper doily, ribbon, raffia, (Optional) 8) Small gift card to convey your intended message. Note: If you do not grow your own flowers, probably your florist or even the local super food store will have the assortment of flowers you need to make your creation.

Slide 7 : Let's Create: Prepare the flowers by allowing the stems to sit in water for at least an hour or overnight if possible. 2) When you are ready to begin, cut the stems on the diagonal to about 4 or 5 inches. Strip all the bottom leaves. 3) Beginning with your center flower, hold it in your left hand and encircle it with your first concentric layer of complimentary flowers or herbs. Secure the stems as you go along with the florist tape, always applying tension to the tape so it will adhere to itself. 4) Add another layer of flowers/herbs and continue to turn the flowers in your hand and wrapping them tightly with floral tape. Continue until you incorporate all the floral elements you wish to use. It should not be larger than 6 inches in diameter. 5) Using about 5 large leaves (such as hosta, rose geranium, ivy), position them around the outer circumference of the tussie-mussie to frame it. Secure all the stems with your florist tape winding from top to bottom. 6) Clip a tiny "X" with your scissors in the center of a paper doily and insert stem end of the tussie-mussie. Secure with small pins. Catch edges of doily with more florist tape. 7) Tie decorative ribbon or raffia onto the stem close to the doily. 8) Don't forget to include a little card to convey the lovely meanings of your flowers and herbs.

(pink) 2" sheer ribbon * Florist wire (coiled) * Glue gun/ glue sticks * Wire cutters * Scissors * Stem wrap tape

Slide 9 : Basic garland making instructions If using fresh flowers : 1. Allow the flowers to stand in a preservative solution in a cool place for several hours. 2. Measure a piece of coiled floral wire to fit the size of the persons’ head. Coiled wire is best because it takes a circular shape. Allow a little extra at each end. Make a hook and eye at the ends of the wire. Bind the wire with stem tape. 3. Wire and tape the individual flowers and leaves. 4. Tape the individual flowers and leaves to the taped wire. 5. Add ribbon streamers down the back.
