The United States of America – the richest and one of the biggest countries in the world – has several names. People say “the United States”, “the States”, “America” or just “the USA” or “the US”. The USA is a group of states, such as Texas and Alaska, each represented by a star on the country’s flag, known as the “Stars and Stripes”. 13 stripes on the flag represent 13 original English colonies. All but two of the states are grouped together between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The USA consists of three separate parts. They are the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska and the rest major part of the USA. There are 50 states and District of Columbia. The Population of the USA is about 290 million people. There are about 25 million Negroes and over half a million Indians.
The USA is separated from Canada in the north and from Mexico in the south. The continental part of the USA consists of the highland regions (Appalachia Mountains in the east and Cordillera in the west) and two lowland regions (the prairie and the Mississippi Valley).
The major rivers of the USA are the Mississippi, the longest river in the world, and the Hudson River.
The Capital of the United States is Washington. The biggest cities of the USA are New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and others.

What are some typical superstitions in the United States?
To have a superstition is to believe that something brings good or bad luck. Some people think that walking under a ladder and a number 13 bring bad luck. In many apartment and office buildings in the US there is no 13th floor and 13th room. Good-luck superstitions are finding a four-leaf clover and knocking on wood.
What is the American dream?
They believe that success is possible for every individual. To own a home is part of the American dream. Housing often costs Americans about 1/3 of the money they earn.
Americans
They are sociable and hospitable. You get taken to parties at the houses of your friends and your friends’ friends. They like new things – and they get rid of their friends as they do of their cars. They love change; they call it the “spirit of adventure”. They change homes and jobs. They like to ask personal questions. The American houses have no hedges or fences.
Fast Food
The big names in American fast food are now well known all over the world. Mc Donald’s, pizzas, chips, hot dogs, hamburgers and fried chicken. Many of the fast food cafes have special offers for families.
