Fire Prevention Chapter 1 Welcome this is your first step in making sure that you home is safe from any fire hazards.I'll tech you the things you need to know in order to detect and fix fire hazards in you home. Now that you know what this course will be able let's get into it a little more. The first thing you need to know about fire prevention is to know what are fire hazards.A fire hazard is something that if left untented can and most of the time will cause a fire. These are such things like heaters, lighters, matches, ect. It's never a good idea to leave any type of heater on when your not going to be in the room with it or are leaving. I know that in the winter you like to come home to a nice warm house but there are other ways to keep your house warm with out taking a chance on not having a house to come back to.If you use a coal/wood stove you want to make sure that it is out be for you go to bed.I've heard of a lot of people leaving their coal/wood stove running when they go to bed and end up catching their house of fire and loosening everything. When you leave the stove with fire in it alone and something in the wood pops or anything like that you take a chance on that little pice of amber getting out and catching the floor on fire and then the whole house.I want you to remember a saying "when in dought put it out."This will help you to remember to turn off all heaters and put the fire in the coal/wood stove out be for you leave or go to bed.Other fire hazards include leaving cloths too close to a electric heater or dryer. When cloths, paper,or anything like that are too close to a electric heater,coal/wood stove, or dryer they dry out.Once they are all dried out they began to burn and a lot of the time people in general don't noticed it until it's too late.when you leave you home make sure all of your electric and base bord heaters are turned off. This will ensure that you will have a home to come home to.In the winter most of the fires I respond to are a result of someone not wanting to take the time to turn the heater off. Also believe it or not a lot of fire are caused by haircare products like hair dryers, curling irons, ect. These can be very dangerous products if not handled carefully. If left one these types of products can short out and become very hot. They do have a temperature control but they are not very good and will mess up very often. Once the temp control is messed up the product can become as hot as the watts it is, witch means it will become hot enough to start a fire in just a few minutes if not turned off. When you use things such as these make sure that you allow them to cool down and then put them away in a cool dry place. Now that you know about the basics we will move on to the next topic. How to detect a fire hazard in you home. In order to find a fire hazard in your home you must first be able to look in the near future to see if the item(s) are left the way they are will cause a fire.If the answer is yes then you will want to turn off, unplug,or put out the item in order to make sure that you will not be awakened in the middle of the night by a fire. Also what you need to make sure of is that you have a smoke detector in the kitchen, bathroom, living room, and in every bedroom in the house. If you have a smoke detector in those room you will lower your chance of a fire by almost 50%. The last thing you need to do is sit down with your parents, husband, brother, or sister and make a fire escape plan. This is a plan the maps out all the exits in the house. What you need to do is go through every room in your home and check to see if there are at least two exits in each room.Doors and windows are the best exit opinions to go with. You also want to make sure that you can fit through a window in order for you to use it as a fire escape.Take the time and see if you and your family can fit through all the windows you are going to use in the plan. It's better to make sure of that be for a fire should happen then to try durning one and get stuck. Once you have the plan done you should make copies and post them where everyone in you home can see them like in the kitchen, living room, and dining room. This plan can save your life in a emergency and you will be happy that you took the time to make it.To go along with your fire escape plan you will need to have a meeting place out side of your home and far enough away so that no one will get hurt by the fire and so that the firefighters can have room to work.Make sure that everyone living in your homes knows where the meeting place is.In the event of a fire you will need to do a check once you get to the meeting place to make sure everyone made it out ok.If someone gets stuck in the house DO NOT go back in to try and get them.Let the firefighters do that. One thing that will help us out when we get there and up that person's chances of making it out alive is to teach everyone that if they are caught in the house not to try and run us and if they hear someone calling out to them to answer us. Also never try to get up and run out of the home. Now that we have that covered let's move on to the in advanced learning on how to prevent a fire from happening. You will need to talk about this with your loved ones and teach them what you have learned in this class. To go along
