PURE DIGITAL FLIP MINO  What it is: Flip Camcorder ‐‐ A small, relatively inexpensive digital camera that records video with audio in a simple, uncomplicated way.  You can record, zoom, play, and delete on the tiny camcorder. It includes built‐in software making it easy to upload the video to the Web without using a separate program.  How it works: Point and shoot – aim the lens toward the thing you want to record and press the button. That’s it! Then transfer the video (using the built‐in USB) to your computer or even straight to the web. The video is stored on a flash drive and allows playback on its LCD screen. The software built into the device makes the video “web ready” in an AVI format. To transfer the video file from the camcorder to the computer, simply “flip” the USB arm out and connect the camcorder to the USB port on the computer. You can then open the camcorder’s directory (the removable disk), browse to the video file, copy the file and paste it directly onto your computer. (To see the video on the computer, you may need to either install the Flip Video software or simply its Codec as necessary.)  Where it is going: Working with digital video is a new form of literacy. Just as we expect students to be able to write as well as read, this camcorder encourages them to create as well as use video…. Students are already recording video with their cell phones; this camcorder allows them to apply what comes naturally in a way that is easier for us to share in a new level of comprehensin. Why it matters to teaching and learning: The ease and low cost of this video‐capture technology has allowed people of all ages and all skill levels to create and share video. As an assessment tool or an outlet of creativity, this technology can be combined with simple video editing software (such as Windows Movie Maker) to tell a story that might otherwise not have been shared. In using this device in teaching and learning, we can begin to think about video as an opportunity behind and not just in front of the lens. We are truly seeing the story through the camera’s (and students’) eye.
