Week 1 Course introduction - Our course is only four weeks long, and each week will have a central topic.  Our weekly themes are  Week 1  Internet Learning Resources Week 2  Search Engines and other Resources for Research Week 3  Tools to Support Learning  Week 4  Copyright, Fair Use, Privacy, Ethics, Children's Internet Safety Syllabus Assignment - Your first assignment is to read the syllabus all the way through!  It's a bit lengthy so it's probably best read while while settling down with your favorite beverage.  It's stored as a google doc.  Pay particular attention to the section called Measurable Course Objectives.  I've tried to relate each one to at least one course assignment.  While there is no penalty for not submitting an assignment by the suggested date, in a course as short as ours it's best simply to keep up with our schedule.  However, we all have busy lives and if it's not possible for you to complete an assignment by a given date then I'll simply assume that you will complete it as soon as possible.  There are rubrics attached to the syllabus for most of our assignment types. Assumptions - Since this is your third course in the program I assume that everyone is now comfortable using a wiki, has been writing weekly in their blog as required and that you are able to use Google Docs.            Assignments - due dates as noted.  Create a personal wiki page in our class wiki with your name across the top On this page write a brief bio including your name, position, interests and future goals. Your bio could also be done as a GoogleDoc with a link to it on your wiki page. Also, include in your bio a list of any conferences, workshops, seminars or other professional development events you may have attended in the past three years and any professional organizations you belong to. Finally, list what goals you may have for this class, i.e., what do you hope to get from this course?   A2a:  Discussion point post: What does the term Internet Learning Resources mean to you at present? Be frank! Put your response on the wiki page entitled "What are Internet Learning Resources" Due week 2.   Examine the web sites  http://webdesign.about.com/od/web20/a/aa021306.htm,  http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/teachers/wa_teachers/wa_workshops/index.cfm  http://www.usca.edu/rpsec/workshops/sites.html#Miscellaneous   A2a:  Post a brief personal reaction to one of them on the " Week1 Personal Reaction " wiki page.  Do any of these sites alter or expand your ideas about what Internet Learning Resources are? Due week 2. NOTE:  A reference such as A2a refers to an assessment corresponding to course Objective 2a.  See our syllabus for the course objectives. At least one of the sites has or links to information about evaluating online resources, its validity, appropriateness, orientation.  The skill of discernment is skill that we all strive to help our students develop.  Discernment requires students to be able to apply critical thinking in order to sift through and evaluate learning resources among all the other web sites they encounter daily.   A4a:  As an Assignment, due week 3, I would like to as you to choose (or modify) an existing Internet Resource Web Site Evaluation Form and use it to evaluate three educational (non-commercial) web sites of your choosing.  You will find many examples of evaluation forms at   http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html and  http://school.discoveryeducation.com/schrockguide/eval.html Our class wiki has a page entitled " Evaluating Resource Sites Assignment "  Use this page to submit your three site evaluations. See if you can save the forms as GoogleDocs and then you can just put links to them on this wiki page.  Don't forget to include your name and the source of each form. Due Week 3   A4b:  A related assignment is to develop an evaluation form that would be appropriate for your students or colleagues to use.  It may be subject or level specific as appropriate.  Create the form as a GoogleDoc and put a link to it on the "Student Resource Site Evaluation Form Assignment" wiki page.  Along with your link write an explanation of why your form looks the way it does.  If practical, try your form with your students and report on how well it worked.  This is also Due week 3.       A1:  Finally, a standing assignment each week is to make an entry in your blog reflecting your thoughts or questions about anything you've encountered this first week.  Please place a link to your blog on the Sidebar of our class wiki.
