Possibility trees, or how not to overlook a solution
Warm-up
How many ways are there to put 3 scary slimy monsters into 2 school backpacks?
Find all ways to add four odd numbers and get 10.
Problem 1. Trace it!
First, try to guess whether you could trace each of the figures below in one continuous line without retracing your own line. Second, find the ways to do it for those that could be traced. Indicate the start point(s).
Any interesting observations? Homework: experiment tracing other shapes and figures.
Problem 2. Crossing a river
Three hikers must cross a river. The bridge is broken, the river is deep. 2 boys are playing near a small rowboat, but it is tiny. The boat can hold only 2 boys or 1 hiker. How do the hikers cross the river? Find all solutions.
Problem 2. Hanoi tower
Can you move the tower to one of the other two pegs? You can only move one ring at a time and can never place a larger ring over a smaller ring. Find the shortest way to do it. Try it with 4 rings now. (Hint – number the rings, so that 1 is the smallest, etc, and write down your steps)
