Slide 2 : In 1700s , Spain and Portugal gained control of most of the land in Mexico, Central America, and South America These lands became known as Latin America. The Spanish and the Portuguese kept tight control over the people living in Latin America. They put strict controls on trade, forcing Latin Americans to trade only with Spain or Portugal.

Slide 3 : Inspired by American Revolution and the French Revolution, Latin Americans began to want freedom, too.

The Class System : The Class System The class system had developed in the Latin American Colonies. The peninsulares were at the top of the class system. They were people born in Spain or Portugal on Europe’s Iberian Peninsula. They held all the important jobs in the government, church and army.

Slide 5 : Next were the Creoles. They were people who were born in Latin America but had European ancestors. The creoles often owned haciendas, or Latin American plantations. By the 1700s , most people in Latin America were neither peninsulares nor creoles. Below these two upper classes were the Mestizos and Mulattoes.

Slide 6 : Mestizos had European and Native American ancestors. Mulattoes had European and African ancestors. Below the mestizo and mulatto class were the Native Americans and the Africans. Most native Americans were free , but very poor.

Slide 7 : They worked for the creoles on the haciendas. Some Africans were free, but most were slaves. They were forced to work on the haciendas.

Slide 8 : Although many creoles were wealthy, they were unhappy with the peninsulares. The penisulares kept the creoles from getting certain jobs. So the creoles were ready for a revolution. The mestizos and mulattoes also wanted change.

Slide 12 : He also fought for the return of Native American lands and an end to slavery. Hidalgo was killed by the Spanish in 1811, but the revolution continued. Mexico won its independence in 1821.
