What is a leader like? : What is a leader like? Think about your favorite teacher/professor Definition of leadership: The process of influencing the activities of an organized group in its efforts toward goal-setting and goal achievement A shorter version: Influence with the goals in mind A big picture –the working plan in our context

How to build trust? : How to build trust? General principle: Set an example, treat your followers the way you want them to treat you, CONSISTENTLY (Tang Jun) Deliver promise – on time, in good quality Empathy: basics for friendship Watch out for the details: everybody is sensitive, however cool they look like. Think and inspire thinking: You are the one who thinks most. My preference, in a structural way. Respect those not present: no personal sabotage Apologize sincerely if you have to: make sure you don’t make the same mistake next time

Power : Power Why your followers follow you but not others? Is it because of your position? Your position just give you the authority but not the power. Power is the ability to get things done by others but authority is about obedience which comes with your position. Feel it difficult to understand? Think about your teachers/professors

8 bases of power : 8 bases of power Referent – identification based on personal characteristics or reciprocal identification based on friendship, association and on common interests Expert – based on your expertise Group – collective approach to problem-solving, focus on the group, rather than the individuals

Support – you need do more than just giving instructions : Support – you need do more than just giving instructions Give resources, suggestions, directions If you yourself don’t know about it either Ask the group or Do the research together

Feedback – an effective way to motivate : Feedback – an effective way to motivate A response to their efforts - Knowledge of past performance It means you have read and thought about their works Reply the emails, give sound comments Enhance performance Suggestions for performance
