Talking about art and photography : Talking about art and photography At an art exhibition, a variety of paintings and
drawings may be on display, for example: portraits,
landscapes and still lifes. Some artists work in oils (oil
paints), while others use watercolours. Styles vary too:
some works of art are realistic, others are abstract.
Skilled artists use a range of techniques to create
different sorts of effects.
A really great work of art (e.g. Mona Lisa by Leonardo
da Vinci) is a masterpiece.

Describing a painting : Describing a painting This painting, Bathers at Asnières by
Georges Seurat, illustrates a typical
scene of 19th-century leisure and the
developing industry in this suburb of
Paris. In the foreground a group of
workmen are relaxing by the river;
in the distance you can just make out
the factory where they probably
work. Everyone is looking out at the
river and ignoring each other, even
the little dog in the bottom left-hand
corner. We can sense the warmth of the
summer’s day in the bright sunlight, light
colours and shadows.
