Uses of the Model : Uses of the Model To study population over time Insight to issues of migration, fertility, economic development, industrialization, urbanization, labor, politics and women It provides a picture of the population dynamics and economic context for a country It provides predictive capability. It provide insight to the economic history of a place

Understanding the Graph : Understanding the Graph High Birth Rates High Death Rates Low RNI High Birth Rates Declining Death Rates Increasing Life Expectancy Increasing NRI Slowly Declining Birth Rates Leveling of Death Rates Moderating of NRI Low & Variable Birth Rates Low Constant Death Rates Low NRI

Stage 1 : Stage 1 Characterized by pre-agricultural societies. Subsistence agriculture and tranhumance. Migrating to follow food sources. Little population growth due to HIGH Birth and Death Rates High Infant and Child Mortality

Stage 2 : Stage 2 Agriculturally based societies with cultivation and livestock. High Birth Rates are maintained for farm labor. Death Rates decline due to better nutrition and settlement patterns and diminished migration.

Stage 3 : Stage 3 Manufacturing –based countries Industrialization Urbanization Decreasing Birth Rates Continually decreasing and leveling off of death rates. Increasing Life Expectancy

Stage 4 : Stage 4 Birth Rates decline to meet death rates. Birth rates are more variable Death rates a generally constant Resulting in minor population growth or declines. Movement from an Industrial to Service-based economy ZPG (Zero Population Growth)

S-Curve and Model Predictions : S-Curve and Model Predictions The population curve indicates that global population will one day maximize and level off. The prediction is somewhere around 10 billion people and around 2060.
